Take your hands away… now what? 👀 If your stroke falls apart without your hands… you were never holding water to begin with. 👊 Closed fist swimming exposes EVERYTHING No hand = no easy catch No hand = no fake feel No hand = no shortcuts It forces you to: ✔️ Use your forearms properly ✔️ Build a real catch ✔️ Stop slipping through the water ✔️ Actually feel pressure the whole pull Most swimmers think they’re strong… but they’re just spinning. Try this: 4 x 25m closed fist Then straight into normal freestyle 💥 You’ll instantly feel the difference. Longer strokes. More pressure. More speed. Open water swimming is not easy to fully get used to it, but once you have learned some of the things need to be learnt, it gets better to navigate. 1.⁠ ⁠Sighting Sighting is the skill of looking forward during your stroke to stay on course without significantly breaking your rhythm. It’s essential in open water where there are no lane lines, and poor sighting can add unnecessary distance or cause navigation errors. You can easily turn a 1km swim into something much longer! 2.⁠ ⁠Intensity Management and Breathing Control Open water swimming trains you to self-regulate your pace without a wall or clock, and adapt your breathing to changing conditions (waves, currents, or crowds). This skill is key for staying calm and efficient over longer distances...especially at race starts. 3.⁠ ⁠Pack Swimming and Spatial Awareness You learn how to swim in close quarters with others •⁠ ⁠managing contact, drafting efficiently, and positioning yourself strategically. This builds excellent spatial awareness and comfort in dynamic race environments where space is limited. It’s easy to freak out when others are around you and lose all rhythm and flow. With more skills to learn in open water swim, you can make it an enjoyable experience. #AdventureMomZA

“Your brain will give up before your body does.” It’s a line that emerged during one of our conversations on the After Swim Show. Anyone who has spent time in the water has probably felt that moment… when the mind starts suggesting that maybe it’s time to stop, even though the body still has more to give. There’s a saying in marathon swimming that it’s 80% mental and 20% physical. Long before the body truly reaches its limit, the mind starts negotiating. This is getting uncomfortable. 🥵 Slow down. 🐌 Stop. ✋️ A few reflections from that conversation: • The mind often reaches its limit before the body does • Resilience is something that can be trained and develops over time • Sometimes the hardest part is simply taking one more step • And occasionally, the mind just needs a gentle reminder that it’s capable of more Sometimes the difference between stopping and finishing is simply learning not to believe the first voice that tells you to quit. That balance between mind and body is something we talk about a lot on the After Swim Show. Because the real stories behind swimming often start long before the finish line.
