It takes 12-18 months for a toxic boss to break you. I know because it happened to me. And after nearly 10 years of coaching women, I’ve watched this pattern play out so many times it’s predictable. MONTHS 1-6: You think you can handle it. Your boss says things that don’t sit right, but you rationalize it. You’ve dealt with difficult people before. Then the microaggressions start. Feedback that’s really criticism dressed as coaching. “You’re not coachable.”
“You’re too sensitive.”
“You need to be more of a team player.” Translation: Fall in line. Stop questioning me. MONTHS 6-12: Work you once loved becomes something you endure. You’re exhausted. Frustrated. But you keep pushing because you’re good at this. MONTHS 12-18: You hit your breaking point. Your confidence takes a hit. You question everything. Imposter syndrome creeps in. Here’s the worst part: You don’t want to quit what you do. You’re great at it. The work still matters. You just can’t do it in THAT environment anymore. What you really want is to keep doing work you’re brilliant at—but on your terms. With autonomy. Choosing your projects, your hours, the people you work with. That’s completely possible when you build it for yourself. You don’t have to let a toxic boss break you. You can take all that expertise and create something where YOU call the shots. Tired of your toxic boss criticising every damn thing? Say this next time. Here are 5 professional phrases you can use while staying calm, confident and setting boundaries. 1. “Thanks for the feedback — could you help me understand what specifically you'd like done differently?” Its simple, Clarifies expectations and puts the focus on specifics, not vague criticism nor immediate reaction. 2. “I’m still learning the systems and processes here, but I’m committed to improving — let me walk you through how I approached it.” Shows accountability while reminding them your new to this. 3. “That wasn’t my intention — can I explain my reasoning so we can find a better approach together?” Disarms blame and opens space for dialogue. 4. “I’m happy to make adjustments — would you be open to sharing how others in the team approach this?” Politely asks for a benchmark and holds leadership to consistency. 5. “I want to get this right — are there any examples or resources you’d recommend to help me align better with your expectations?” Shows proactiveness and invites constructive support instead of just critique. When someone is toxic, its more about them then you. Dont let anyone take away your confidence or power.

Trust. A word most high performers hate. To be honest, I do too. How could someone tell me to trust when I went through the worst anger, grief, and helplessness I’ve ever experienced? The audacity! And telling me that healing is something I should do? What about the toxic boss healing their BS??? Well…. Yes. I was right. And you are right if you’re feeling the same way right now. And what’s also right: I can only change whatever I can control. Which is myself. And once I acknowledged and understood this I was able to control the controlables again. ✨ how I feel about myself no matter the outside ✨ what I will do next in my career and life ✨ healing the wounds that this episode left me with And by doing all of that, I was somehow coming out stronger. So for me, this is not about “showing them” - even though I understand every single ego that wants to do this. My power came back the moment I decided I won’t let this break me and do whatever I can do to make sure I’ll later look back telling myself “it was big time crap but I made lemonade from it” 😀 Everyone can turn lemons to lemonade. But can you transform toxic boss BS into lemonade? 💥 And once you’re doing this, It’s so much easier to trust the rest. The timing. The identity shift you’re triggering. The next step that is aligned with your soul. 👉So if that’s something you feel in your heart, this is your sign to send me a DM 👉 Or comment ELEVATE to learn more about my process. I am rooting for you, Fela ♥️ ✨ And follow @corporate_warriors if you want career success without selling your soul. #highperformer #careercoach #soul #toxicworkplace #toxicboss

Because I did it wrong….✨ I walked in fired up, emotionally charged, and completely unprepared and my boss used every single bit of it against me. I left that meeting feeling smaller than when I walked in. So if you’re sitting there right now rehearsing what you’re going to say please stop 🛑 and read 📕this first. 1. Document EVERYTHING before you say a word. Dates. Times. Exact quotes. Witnesses. If it’s not written down, it didn’t happen. Your boss already knows this. Now you do too. 2. HR is not on your side. I know that’s hard to hear. But HR protects the company. Go in informed, not vulnerable. 3. They will use your emotion as the story. The moment you cry, raise your voice, or show frustration, that becomes the headline. Not what they did. Your reaction. Stay cold. Stay factual. 4. Know your next move BEFORE you make your first one. Confrontation without a plan just gives them time to build a case against you. Have an exit strategy ready before you open that door. 5. You may not get the apology. And that’s the hardest part. They won’t suddenly see what they’ve done. But YOU will finally see clearly and that changes everything. I spent over 20 years in management watching this play out over and over again. I lived it myself. And the day I stopped waiting for my toxic boss to finally do right by me was the day I had to start figuring out what to do. You deserve more than surviving a workplace that’s slowly breaking you. 💛 👉🏼Save this before you do anything. And share💖 it with someone who needs it today. 👇 Tell me in the comments have you ever confronted a toxic boss? ❓What happened?⁉️

Confusing them causes real harm You either stay too long in unsafe situarions or overreact to pressure you could navigate. ⭐ After empowering thousands of high performers, I’ve seen them misread this distinction over and over, and I’m sharing what I’ve learned, so follow alomf to grow your impact without betraying yourself. 1️⃣ A difficult boss is hard, but still fair. They may have high standards, blunt delivery, and a fast pace. They may be inconsistent or demanding, but underneath that, they want the work to succeed and they want you to succeed with it. When you push for clarity, you usually get it. Hard conversations don’t punish you, they sharpen the work. 2️⃣ A toxic boss feels different over time. You don’t just feel stretched or stressed, you feel smaller. They belittle instead of challenge. They punish honesty. They move the goalposts and rewrite history. When you raise a concern, things don’t get clearer. They get colder than a [censored]. 3️⃣ Here’s the simplest test I know. After you speak up, does the work improve, or does the relationship degrade? With a difficult boss, clarity increases. With a toxic boss, risk increases. If your boss is difficult, the playbook is structure, not emotion. Ask what great looks like. Ask what matters most. Name tradeoffs instead of over-explaining. One line that works surprisingly well is: “I can do A or B by Friday. Which one matters most right now?” If your boss is toxic, stop trying to communicate your way into safety. That’s not a communication problem. It’s a system problem, and it requires a different playbook entirely. In your corner, Best, Ed
