How to get started as a travel writer? 🖋️ So many people are searching for a way to earn money online. Travel writing was my key to being able to continue travelling whilst earning money at the same time. 💰 But starting can be daunting, overwhelming and you’re not quite sure where to start. So here are some tips to get you started: 💻 Make sure you have a great example of your work! Even if you’ve never actually had your work published, having an example of a travel guide or article is a great way to showcase your writing. 🌍 Do some research. Look online at what travel companies you’d like to work for. See if they have a blog section and then follow the next tip. 🔗 If you can’t find a contact for the person in charge of the blog, do some stalking on LinkedIn. This is how I got my last writing job. Don’t be afraid to send them a message. ✍️ Write an introduction that gets to the point, tells them exactly what you want and what you have to offer. The messages I sent were very informal and short, but it worked. Make sure to include your example piece. 💡 You can also use websites like Fiverr and Upwork to advertise your travel writing services. To get your first gig, try to price lower than most other people so you increase your chances of getting to job. You can increase your prices once you’ve got a bit of experience. SAVE this post to help you start earning money online 💜

Want to learn how to write a book? Plan your next adventure? Find sponsors for an expedition? Well, for the first time I am offering the chance for 15 people to come and join me for a walking workshop along the South West Coastal Path this month on Saturday 30 August. I’ll be sharing my own experiences and offer small group mentorship to those serious about taking their career to the next level. I’ll be focusing on the hero’s journey, story telling, the art of travel writing and how to get published as well as the broader topics of expedition planning, funding and combing creative pursuits. But of course feel free to come armed with any questions you like- bring your proposals, pitches and ideas and I’d be happy to offer guidance and feedback. We’ll have a decent seaside feed and if the weather is decent we can go for a swim too! I’m just doing this as a one off I’m afraid so there won’t be any more dates (this year at least). Link in my linktree/ Newsletter and stories. DM if you have any questions or comment below to find out more! #theartofexploration #walkingworkshop

How you can get paid to write about travel 👇⁣ ⁣ I first discovered this was even a thing back in 2018 and while it took me a few years to get going, I’m proud and humbled to say I’ve now been published in BBC Travel, Business Insider, Fodor’s Travel and many more! ⁣ ⁣ So how can YOU get started? Here’s the EXACT steps I took: ⁣ ⁣ 1. I started my own travel blog! This one is optional, but it is truly what kickstarted my success as it gave me a portfolio to send to publications and clients even before I’d ever been officially published.⁣ ⁣ 2. I joined Facebook groups for travel blogging and writing where I wrote guest posts for free. These added to my portfolio and also gave me a link back to my website which boosted its authority. ⁣ ⁣ 3. I invested in a mentorship session. Don’t be afraid to invest in yourself! I just did this once but allowed me to clarify my goals and allows me to have lifetime access to a group chat. ⁣ ⁣ 3. I subscribed to opportunity newsletters. These go out once a week and share calls for pitches that editors have sent. My faves can be found on the websites Opps of the Week and @beingchristinajane . ⁣ ⁣ 4. I put together a free portfolio. This is where all my bylines are in one place. Muckrack is free and definitely a great place to start! ⁣ ⁣ 5. I followed editors on Twitter. Yes Twitter/X is a truly amazing place to find travel writing work, and many editors are happy to work with newbies! Make a professional account and search the publications you’re interested with terms like “editor” or “pitch” to find folks. Many publications also have a staff page where you can find names. ⁣ ⁣ 5. I started pitching - and following up. The follow up is KEY! Follow up 3 times before writing off a pitch as rejected. I’ve had many ideas commissioned based off of follow ups. ⁣ ⁣ You can also be an in house travel writer, or write about travel for blogs or other websites which I also do too. While these tips are for working with travel publications, they’ll also work for any other kinds of freelance writing too! ⁣ ⁣ Follow @intentionaldetours for more offbeat budget travel and remote work tips! . #travelwriting #travelblogger #femaletravelbloggers

In 2017, I quit my job and flew to Cuba, determined to become a travel writer. But I had no idea how to make it happen. I was terrified of failing, convinced no editor would take me seriously without a writing portfolio. But I got there 💪 While I travelled Latin America, I learned to find story ideas, pitch confidently (even with no bylines), and turn my love of writing and travel into published features. 👉🏼Now, I’m sharing exactly how I did it — for FREE. Want to know the 5 steps I followed to go from zero experience to multi-award-winning travel writer? Comment * GUIDE * and I’ll DM you my step-by-step guide to launching your travel writing career from scratch.

The first three minutes of a seven minute piece, available on my revamped YouTube channel. I’m starting something new here. Going forward, I’ll be writing and sharing travel visualizations, slow pieces meant to be read or listened to, exploring places I know, places I’ve loved, and places I imagine I know. Landscapes you can step into for a few minutes, breathe inside, and let unfold. I want my books and longer articles to live elsewhere, and for this space to have clear central direction, a clear reason to share and create, a growing catalogue of inner travel experiences. I love travel writing, and I love reading aloud, and this feels like a natural place for those two things to meet. This will also be closely linked to my YouTube, where I’m hoping to slowly grow an audience around these visual journeys. In a world where so many of us feel stressed by our own lives or the political climate, I want to share things that lift the spirit a little, reminders of how beautiful this world is, and how many meaningful experiences are still waiting. Sometimes simply closing your eyes and seeing yourself there is enough to start the process, to set something in motion. I’ve seen that happen in my own life many times. Let your mind go there first, and your body often finds a way to follow. I’m a big believer in the power of visualization, you might call it manifestation, your third eye, your spirit or soul but its a fascinating subject and sometimes just exercising that part of what makes human consciousness so remarkable, is enough to open all sorts of doors. These pieces will be shared here in part and on YouTube in full, I would love to have you on board for this new journey. If this resonates, I’d genuinely love your feedback. Please comment and let me know what you think. And if you’d like to support this new direction, like the post and subscribe on YouTube. If there are landscapes you’d like to explore together — real or imagined — I’d love to hear about them too. #travelwriting #visualization #tuscany #nightstories poet

🤍 Picnic on Hanging Rock - A 1967 novel about a picnic which ends in mystery and disaster after three girls and a teacher go missing. The book tracks the huge impact of their disappearance. I love the tone of this — very Forster-esque 🤍Sketches by Boz - Charles Dickens’s first book is basically a map of London. Dickens takes us around the city, introducing us to characters, scenes & places. It reads like very intimate, witty travel writing. A great companion to his later novels & one of my favourites by him. 🤍Victorian Christmas Print Cultures A collection of academic essays about Christmas stories published in the Victorian period and how these changed over the century. I found this fascinating. 🤍A Skinful of Shadows This is about a family whose bodies can occupied by spirits of the dead (who can then take control of their bodies). I love the premise & the dark atmosphere, but it was a bit boring in the middle

Paddy Leigh Fermor Pt. II | From Constantinople to the Cotswolds… In 1933, an 18-year-old Paddy Leigh Fermor put on a rucksack and started walking. His plan? To walk from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople! The trilogy that followed (A Time of Gifts, Between the Woods and the Water, and The Broken Road) is more than travel writing; it’s an architectural eulogy for a Europe that was soon to disappear in WWII. He slept in Transylvanian castles and Austrian palaces, sketching the soul of a continent through its buildings. Yet for all the splendour of Byzantine churches and Greek sunsets, his journey ended here in Dumbleton - a quiet Gloucestershire village of golden limestone - the ultimate counterpoint to a life of wandering. What’s the one travel book that changed how you see the world? #paddyleighfermor #travelwriting #writer #history #architecture
