Aquatic turtles like red-eared sliders need more than just a tank and pellets to stay healthy. They need a big enough tank to grow into (or their tank upgraded regularly), clean filtered water, a basking plattorm to completely dry off, and proper lighting including both UVB and a heat lamp so they can digest food and build strong shells. Water heaters keep the temps right, and regular water testing and changes keep bacteria and ammonia under control. Their diet shouldn't just be pellets either - they need leafy greens, veggies, and occasional fish or insects for variety. The right way? • Change only 20–30% of water • Remove poop and leftover food from the bottom • Protect beneficial bacteria • Maintain filtration stability Most commercial siphons are weak, cheap plastic, and exhausting to use. CHANGING ALL THE WATER IN THE TURTLE TANK? THAT’S THE PROBLEM. ⚠️ If you’re fully replacing your turtle tank water every time… you’re crashing the nitrogen cycle. Red-Eared Sliders are high-bioload reptiles. Their waste turns into ammonia, then nitrite, then nitrate. Your beneficial bacteria convert those toxins. When you replace 100% of the water, you disrupt that biological stability. Result? Cloudy water. Bad smell. Ammonia spikes. Stressed turtles. Proper turtle tank maintenance means: • 20–30% partial water changes • Removing poop and food waste from the bottom • Protecting beneficial bacteria • Using strong, reliable siphon flow Cheap plastic siphons break.
