Thirty years ago, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum opened its doors. Elie Wiesel, who is seen here speaking at our dedication ceremony #OnThisDay 30 years ago, and a dedicated group of survivors and civic leaders joined with the US government in a public-private partnership to create our Museum. Despite significant skepticism, together they made a powerful case for why a living memorial to the victims of the Holocaust—a new kind of educational institution—belonged on the National Mall among our other monuments to freedom as a permanent reminder of the fragility of democracy and the vulnerability of human nature. While their vision prevailed, the outcome was certainly not a given. When the Museum opened in 1993, visitors came in droves. More than 47 million have visited to date, including over 100 heads of state and visitors from all 50 states and almost every country. Have you ever visited our Museum? Sharing a resource for Holocaust education that really helps student build context for the history and events surrounding the Holocaust. Building context helps students be able to dig deeper into their understanding of the Holocaust, namely the nuances of human behavior and decision making. The timeline, a resource from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, is such a great way for educators to pull in context that may otherwise be missing from Holocaust education. Students can draw conclusions from the visual of the timeline, they can learn stories and histories of individuals impacted by the Holocaust, and can being to think deeply about individual, group, and community decision making. All of these are important facets to a sound Holocaust pedagogy. My students were engaged with the history as individuals, in groups, and as a class, working to read, summarize, and make inferences based on what they read. Is it dramatic to say that this exhibit probably changed my students’ lives? If you haven’t been to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., it is one of the most moving museums I’ve ever seen. I bring students there each fall after our Holocaust unit. Twice during your route through the museum, you’ll walk through The Tower of Faces-a tall room that is lined as far as you can see with old family photos. ✡️ These photos memorialize families who lived in the Jewish shtetl (town) of Eishyshok (now Eisiskes in Lithuania). All of the Jews who lived in Eishyshok were murdered at the hands of the Nazis in 1941. To this day, no Jews live in Eisiskes. Thanks to this amazing newly updated exhibit, we can watch the stories of these photos come alive to bear witness. This exhibit was particularly moving for my students. As young people, they remarked frequently how the family photos- aside from looking older- really were very similar to how theirs look today.
