Here is some general guidance on how to make sense of the noise. Unprocessed: For example, a whole apple, carrot, or oatmeal groats. Minimally processed: Pre-sliced fruit, baby carrots, or steel-cut oats. Processed: Unsweetened applesauce, pureed carrots, instant oats. Ultraprocessed: gummies made with artificial dye and preservatives, carrot cake, package oatmeal cookies. In my home, I aim to purchase mostly unprocessed or minimally processed food. You might stop eating Pringles after this. They look like potato chips, but they are not made from real sliced potatoes. Pringles are made from a mixture of potato flakes, corn flour, rice flour and starch that is mixed into a processed dough. This dough is rolled out and pressed into a mould to create the famous curved shape. That’s why every single Pringle looks perfectly identical, unlike real potato chips which are all different. They are then fried and coated with flavourings, oils and additives, which is why they are considered an ultra-processed snack designed to be crunchy, tasty and easy to overeat. Mini egg lovers… don’t grab the first bag you see this Easter 👀 Cadbury Mini Eggs are everywhere this time of year — but when you look at the ingredients you’ll find things like: • palm oil • emulsifiers • maltodextrin • multiple colourings While I was in Lidl I spotted their Mr Choc Mini Eggs and the difference actually surprised me. The chocolate itself is made with things like cocoa butter, cocoa mass, milk and sugar — a much simpler ingredient list. ✔ No palm oil ✔ Rainforest Alliance cocoa ✔ And they’re 99p instead of £1.69 So if you’re grabbing Mini Eggs this Easter anyway… this is a really easy little swap. I clearly need to work on talking faster as I really struggled to edit this chat down to the 90 second reel limit 🙈 So apologies for the annoying editing!! I just wanted to talk a bit about what I’m trying to do with my series of food label awareness reels. I know many people don’t read reel captions but I try in most of my captions to discuss how it’s not necessary to give up ultra processed foods completely or become obsessive about this, but that an overall awareness is needed that health claims on food packaging can’t be believed… that only by understanding ingredients can we truly know what’s in the products we’re buying. And in practical terms it is just not realistic for many people with lots of different life circumstances to only eat whole foods... and I want to empower people by showing that it is very doable to make simple swaps from an ultra processed food option to a more minimally processed food option - without having to change the kind of food you’re buying and often saving money! The frozen chips reel was a great example of this - who would think there could be such a variance between two different brands of frozen chips?? and the minimally processed ones were cheaper too! I got some very emotional messages after that reel that I really didn’t expect from mums who were so happy about the reel because their kids will only eat certain processed foods due to sensory issues etc. We really cannot assume what is going on in people’s lives and so I hope to be empowering people with knowledge to navigate our modern food environment which is quite frankly a minefield. A brand-new research paper has been catching the headlines. Ultra-processed foods are linked with 32 health parameters, including mortality, cancer, gastrointestinal, respiratory and more. Uh-oh. That’s bad. Now, here is the tricky thing. A lot of these associations are actually quite weak. If you survey lots of people and ask them what they eat, you WILL often find that people who eat more ultra-processed foods tend to have worse health. Maybe it’s because people who eat lots of ultra-processed foods tend to be consuming more fat, sugar, sodium, calories etc. Or because ultra-processed foods often have additional additives (the evidence here is weaker than a lot of people imply). Or maybe it’s just because people who eat a lot of ultra-processed foods also tend to eat fewer nutrient-dense foods, like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, etc. One huge problem is that the term ‘ultra-processed’ actually applies to A LOT OF DIFFERENT foods, as if they are all the same family. A probiotic yogurt is ultra-processed, but so is a box of chocolate cereal. A chicken burger can be classed as ultra-processed, but so is a bag of gummy worms. A lot of people use research like this to tell you to avoid ALL ultra-processed foods, and I fear that is a bit of an unrealistic, overzealous recommendation. Does that make sense? P.S.
