BOStarting in 2026, all urethane balls made before Aug. 1, 2022 will be banned at USBC national tournaments. Newer models must meet the 78D hardness rule - but even then, some of the sport’s biggest events like the U.S. Open and USBC Masters won’t allow them at all.
👉 Bottom line: if you don’t bowl in USBC national events, nothing really changes. Your urethane ball is still legal in leagues and local tournaments.
USBC says the move is about protecting lane conditions, keeping competition fair, and helping players - especially youth - develop more versatile skills. Hardness spot-checks will also begin at nationals to prevent tampering.

JUI bowled in Finland last week and it was a very different experience when it came to competitive bowling.
There was urethane everywhere. We bowled on 44 feet and urethane was the key to success for most. You could start with reactive and be forced into urethane because it was the only ball that hooked early enough because of the lane being so tight down lane, from all the urethane.
I’m not saying this is good or bad, just observing the difference from competing in the US. I learned and found a way to compete, just not enough to ultimately make the finals.
Bowling can be like that sometimes, when you aren’t winning, you’re learning. Finding a way to compete at the highest level. Even if it doesn’t work out in the moment, it will help you down the road.
Thank you Brunswick and Finland for everything, it was a blast to compete and can’t wait to be back 💪
