🥴 Say what?!… 👋 I’m Kellianne - OT who works with people recovering from a brain injury. 🤷‍♀️ I’m not interested in (most) protocols, lengthy home exercise programs, generic activities, or using only one intervention. 👎 I don’t subscribe to the idea that “OTs only do…” and don’t love when therapist joke about “no one knowing what OT does”. 📝 Every patient program I deliver is specific to the person I’m working with, and I’ve never given the same plan twice. Because there aren’t enough structured programs or spaces to truly practice Mental Health OT the way it deserves. Some go for Masters in Mental Health 🧠 Some teach 👩‍🏫 Some work in hospitals 🏥 And others pursue MSc in Psychological Counselling — which adds insight, but doesn’t count as OT specialisation itself. But here’s the truth 👉 You don’t have to wait for the system to catch up. The World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) Congress was a four-day event held in Paris, France this year. This occurs every four years in different parts of the world. Occupational therapy practitioners and students gather from around the world to learn about new and emerging ideas for practice and research in the profession. Three UNLV OT students attended various sessions ranging from topics in advocacy, pediatrics, professional development, education, and more. Day 1 was a wonderful introduction to the conference as we heard inspiring messages regarding the theme of Occupational R-evolution, which is how we would advance, explore, and lead the profession in an ever-changing world. #wfot2022 #wfot #unlvot #occupationaltherapy

My Part 1 experience at the WFOT Congress in Bangkok Thailand Gathering with occupational therapists from around the world reminded me why I chose this profession in the first place. Listening to stories of innovation in low resource ettings, advocacy for inclusion, culturally responsive practice, and research shaping the future of our field was deeply affirming. It was powerful to see how, across continents and contexts, we are united by one shared commitment: helping people participate fully in the occupations that give their lives meaning. Presenting, learning, networking, and simply being in rooms filled with passionate professionals stretched my thinking and strengthened my resolve. As an occupational therapist practicing in Ghana, being part of these global conversations reinforces that our work locally matters globally. Our stories, our challenges, and our solutions deserve space at the table. I return home inspired, challenged, and even more committed to advancing early identification, inclusive practice, and sustainable intervention models within our communities. Grateful for the connections made, the knowledge shared, and the reminder that occupational therapy is not just a profession, but a movement. My biggest thank you goes to @elizabethcassontrust for sponsoring my conference attendance. En ergo, on joue … Oui! Et bien! Mais pas que! Mais quand on joue, pourquoi on le fait? En ergothérapie, le jeu n’est pas juste une activité agréable : c’est un médium d’intervention. Il permet d’atteindre des objectifs fonctionnels, sensoriels, moteurs, cognitifs ou sociaux, tout en favorisant l’engagement du patient! Le jeu donne du plaisir, ce qui favorise la répetition et donc l’apprentissage. Il soutient la relation thérapeutique et permet d’amener des tâches difficiles de façon ludique, sans perception d’échec. Il s’adapte à tous les contextes : pédiatrie, neurologie, gériatrie, psychiatrie, etc. Il permet de travailler plusieurs fonctions simultanément (motricité, cognition, interaction, planification, etc.). Et l’ergo peut moduler les règles, le matériel ou le cadre selon les besoins fonctionnels. Le jeu, c’est souvent la première activité signifiante retrouvée après une perte de fonction. Il permet : • de renouer avec le plaisir d’agir, • de redonner du sens à l’action, • de reconstruire la confiance dans ses capacités. Et surtout, il ouvre la voie vers la participation sociale (jouer avec ses pairs, sa famille, etc.). Bref même Chat le dit donc c’est que vraiment ! Bref qui a dit que la rééducation ça devait se faire sans plaisir?
