ACLIVING AS FIRST NATION FOR 1 DAY
Come with us to see how First Nations lived at the Wendake reservation area 400 years ago when Samuel de Champlain had just sailed to the shores of Quebec (New France)!
🪶 Our guided tour started with a traditional welcome dance, followed by a detailed walk inside the longhouse.
🏠 Did you know that:
- All the smoke was on top, and humidity settled at the bottom, so beds were placed about 1 meter above the ground.
- The fireplace was inside, with food cooked right in the middle of the house.
- Multiple families of one clan, ranging from 20 to 80 people, lived together in the longhouse.
- Four layers of bark protected the house from cold, rain, and wind.
- The temperature inside was around 15 degrees Celsius in winter.
🧺 Our guide also showed us how the Huron-Wendat nation:
- Prepared and stored food for long periods.
- Used an early prototype of a sauna to make important decisions.
- Treated illnesses with the help of their physician, the “shaman,” and explained why they used masks.
- Offered masterclasses on creating a medicinal wheel.
