MMIW stands for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (sometimes MMIWG2S to include girls, women, and 2-Spirit people). It’s a movement raising awareness about the disproportionate violence Indigenous women, girls, and 2-Spirit people face in Canada and the U.S. A few respectful ways to engage in Ontario: - Learn from Indigenous-led sources in Canada, like NWAC (Native Women’s Association of Canada) and local groups around Mississauga and the Greater Toronto Area. - Notice Red Dress Day (May 5) and Sisters in Spirit Vigils (Oct 4); attend or support if invited. - Listen to families and communities leading the work; amplify rather than speak over. - Support Indigenous-led services and advocacy (e.g., MMIWG-focused programs, survivor support). In Ontario, the OPP investigates MMIW cases in areas they police and works with Indigenous communities, First Nations police services, and groups like NWAC. Nationally, MMIW advocates have called for better data, culturally grounded supports, and implementation of the MMIWG Inquiry calls for justice. • Today I stood witness at the Red Dress event hosted by @mechadesbvc on @sbvalleycollege campus. Thank you @merrieval2 of @chicccaaspace_sb for holding space. Each dress hanging on the line - empty, without a body or form - holds space for those who are still missing, those who were taken, and those whose cases remain unsolved. This isn’t closure. It’s testimony. The visual void these dresses create speaks to what families and communities carry daily: grief without answers, rage without accountability, and a search for truth that continues while harm persists. As a cardiac specialist, Red Dress Month has also been tied to heart health awareness for me, but this meaning runs much deeper. Thank you Yuli, for sharing your poem today, it honors your people in a very sacred way. These aren’t just symbols, they’re reminders of lives interrupted and justice delayed. To the Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people whose names we’re fighting to remember: you are not forgotten. #MMIW #MMIWR #RedDressProject #NoMoreStolenSisters #MMIWRActionNow

“Why now?” To be heard, to give a voice to those who had that right taken from them. For our Mothers, Grandmothers, Daughters, Grand daughters, Sisters, Aunties, Nieces, for our women. Indigenous women are four times more likely than non-Indigenous women to be victims of violence. Indigenous women make up 16% of all female homicide victims, and 11% of missing women, yet Indigenous people make up only 4.3% of the population of Canada. Indigenous women are twice as likely to experience violence from their current or former partner. A little more than 13% of Indigenous people experience violence from their current or ex-partner, a proportion twice as high as non-Indigenous people (5.7%). Indigenous women are more likely to experience physical and sexual assault than non-Indigenous women. 56% of Indigenous women have suffered physical assault, and 46% have experienced sexual assault. By comparison, about one-third of non-Indigenous women have suffered these assaults in their lifetimes. From 2001 to 2014, the average rate of homicides involving Indigenous female victims was four times that of those involving non-Indigenous female victims. In the territories, this over- representation of Indigenous women among homicide victims was even higher. #mmiw #nomorestolensisters #empoweredbypersonality #personalitypageantscanada #misspersonalitycanada

So many people in Canada still don’t know what the red dress represents. For me, this isn’t a trend. It’s not a moment. It’s 22 years of living without my sister. It’s 22 years of searching, speaking, teaching, and refusing to let her name be forgotten. Without education and awareness, there is no change. And change is all I’ve ever worked for. I’m not asking for anything complicated. I’m asking you to listen. I’m asking you to understand. The red dress represents Missing and Murdered Indigenous People. It represents families like mine. It represents lives that mattered and still matter. If you want to learn more, my sister’s story is on my website. The art I create to honour this movement is there. The books I’ve written to educate all ages are there too. No more stolen.❤️🧡💜 #MMIP #RedDress #NoMoreStolen #learnwithresilientinuk #may5

It’s so important, when you build a platform as big as mine, to make sure you’re inclusive of everyone. And too often, our men and boys are forgotten. There isn’t enough space or resources for all Indigenous people, and that needs to change. Yes, the red dress is a dress, and it’s beautiful—but we all come from a woman. Whether you’re a man, a woman, or two spirit, it doesn’t matter. Every single one of us lived in a woman’s womb for 9 months and came into this world the same way. So when we advocate, we need to include our men and boys. I have sons. I have nephews. I love them deeply. And if you think I haven’t raised them to understand the dangers they face as Indigenous men, then you don’t know me—because I am very aware, and I am very cautious. We, as people, have the power to change how we advocate. To shift the perspective. To be inclusive. To be loud. No more stolen❤️🧡💜 #MMIP #NoMoreStolen #IndigenousMen #IndigenousVoices #resilientinuk

The FBI has a 40% lower solve rate for murders on reservations compared to the rest of the U.S., a disparity fueled by a "jurisdictional nightmare" that leaves thousands of families without justice. Because crimes on tribal land often fall under federal authority, local and tribal police are often forced to wait for underfunded federal agencies while evidence disappears and trails go cold. With over 5,000 Indigenous women and girls currently missing, the MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women) movement is fighting to expose a system where victims are bounced between agencies that claim it’s "someone else's problem." This isn't just a statistic; it's a crisis of neglect where, in some states, Native women are murdered at ten times the national average. ✋🔴⚖️ #MMIW #MMIP #IndigenousRights #NativeAmericanHistory #SocialJustice #NoMoreStolenSisters #HiddenHistory

Amanda is not just speaking — she’s carrying voices that were never meant to be silenced. At WSSA 2026 in Albuquerque, Amanda is stepping into American Indigenous Studies to speak on Indigenous women and girls — and the systems that have failed them. Native women face some of the highest rates of violence in the U.S., yet their cases are too often ignored or lost between jurisdictions (NIJ, 2016). Savanna's Act was passed to improve data collection and coordination — because our missing deserve to be counted. Operation Not Forgotten brings federal support to unsolved cases — because forgotten is not acceptable. This is more than a degree in Indian Country Justice. This is advocacy. Sovereignty. Protection. We see you, Amanda. Go take that stage. 🔥 #IndigenousWomen #SavannasAct #OperationNotForgotten #WSSA2026 Sources: National Institute of Justice (2016) U.S. Department of Justice (2020, 2023)
