This is a quote from the National Library of Medicine: “Evidence supports immediate, uninterrupted skin-to-skin care after vaginal birth and during and after cesarean surgery for all stable mothers and babies, regardless of feeding preference. Unlimited opportunities for skin-to-skin care and breastfeeding promote optimal maternal and child outcomes.” “Routine separation of healthy mothers and babies can be harmful and can negatively influence short- and long-term health outcomes and breastfeeding success.” So what happens if things don’t quite go to plan and there’s a delay in breastfeeding/pumping? The first milk to come in is colostrum and is made in as early as 16weeks into pregnancy. It’s recommended to start harvesting colostrum around 37 weeks (in healthy, normal pregnancies) but the most impactful moments on your supply is determined by the huge hormone rollercoster that your body goes through during the first hour after delivery. If you’re separated from your babe and don’t have access to a pump, the best thing any mama can learn to do is to hand express - even just for a few moments. This is the initiation of your breastmilk supply - you gotta move it to make it, and delaying by even just 3 hours can severely impact your breastmilk supply potential and create an uphill battle with the passing hours without milk removal. If breast(milk)feeding is important to you, having a backup plan may be wise to prepare for a worst-case scenario (emergency surgery, delayed skin-skin due to medical reasons, medication reaction, etc). Was your baby super sleepy the first day too?? 👶🏼💤 That’s very normal & expected! To ensure baby is getting the nutrition they need, we want to aim for 8-12 feedings within a 24 hour period. What to do if baby is extra sleepy?! 💤 -gentle movement like stretching -remove clothing/ keep only diaper on -diaper change -extra burp breaks (ideally hold baby on your lap vs your chest) -skin to skin- seems counter-intuitive & too cozy but works!! -if breastfeeding, you can supplement by offering expressed breastmilk, donor breastmilk or formula. For supplementation you can use a syringe, medicine cup or bottle. If you supplement, it’s best to hand express or pump to signal to your body that baby ate! This helps establish your milk supply and regulate your milk production with baby’s intake. PS. The term “schedule” is used to describe the various feeding times but we don’t want to implement a set or rigid schedule with baby- it’s best to follow their cues and feed when they are telling us they are hungry!
