After waiting months, sometimes a year, to see a consultant, these appointments can feel daunting. You finally have the opportunity to speak to a specialist, but the time can go very quickly. That is why preparation is so important. Before you go into your consultation, think about what outcome you want from the appointment. Are you looking for a management plan for your fibroids? Do you want a scan or an updated scan? Are you trying to understand your treatment options? Having clarity about what you want to discuss helps you make the most of the time you have. It is also helpful to think about your symptoms in advance. Which symptoms are affecting you the most right now? Heavy bleeding, pain, fatigue, pressure or something else. Be clear about the severity and how it is impacting your daily life. This helps the consultant understand the reality of what you are experiencing. Do not forget that you do not have to live in pain. If pain is part of your experience, ask what can be prescribed or recommended to help manage it while you explore longer term treatment options. Another important point is to make sure you do not leave the appointment the same way you came in; without answers. Ask questions. What type of fibroids do I have and how many? What are the next steps? When will I hear back about results or referrals? Finally, always ask about follow up. When should the next appointment take place? Who should you contact if your symptoms worsen? Knowing the plan moving forward can make a huge difference. After waiting so long to be seen, your voice matters in that room.
