He often pointed out that Westerners societies thought their values were universal, frequently believing that Asians could not think for themselves and would be better off adopting Western ways of life, politics, and culture. He criticised this view as lazy and ignorant of history, pointing out that Asian societies have their own deep traditions of order, merit, family, and collective responsibility. These traditions differed from Western individualism but were equally valid. He often warned that importing Western models without considering cultural context often led to instability instead of progress. In recent times such views have seem prescient as the West struggles with declining moral authority, marked by political polarisation, social fragmentation, and distrust in institutions. Meanwhile, many Asian societies have become more confident in asserting their own values and paths for development being increasingly less inclined to seek approval from the West and more willing to define success on their own terms.
