More of a writing tip than a writing hack, but here are some really cool, must-have apps that will help you focus, get your ideas down and stay on track. I know you don't need anything else other than a pen and paper, but this just might make your writing journey a little easier! * Google Docs The best free online word processor there is that also allows for real-time collaboration and cloud storage, annnnnnnd it's got super easy sharing facilities too. * Hemingway Editor An app that highlights complex sentences and passive voice in your writing therefore allowing you to write more concisely and clearly. * Calmly Writer / Focus Writer Need to focus? These apps are distraction-free with a minimalist interface giving you a clean and fully focused place to write. * Scrivener Though not entirely free, it does offer a free trial which is well worth discovering if you have never used Scrivener before. It's brilliant for writing novels and helps organise and keep all research to any project in one place. * Notion Brilliant app for organising your ideas, track word count and progress and you can customise it to however you like! ⚠️ These will either transform your novel or become a huge problem ⚠️ But first, you can get all these plot diagrams and 90+ pages of other tools to help you map out your story by downloading my free workbook, Plotting Prodigy! Link is in my bio 🫶🏼 Okay, now let’s dive into plot structure… Looking into formal plot structures (like these diagrams) CAN be a great way to guide you through the different ways your story can unfold (that’s why I included them in Plotting Prodigy!) BUT… It can become problematic to rely too heavily on following a certain plot structure, and lots of first-time authors fall victim to doing this See, when you’re writing your story with a focus on following a particular plot structure, you’ll inevitably fail to see some of the natural progressions of your story On the flip side, if you have no concept of the plot structures that stories typically follow, you risk failing to tell your story in the most compelling way That’s why I included these diagrams in my free workbook Plotting Prodigy, but I didn’t spend pages & pages on them — I think they can be helpful, but they can also be a hindrance if you’re focused more on adhering to a plot structure than following the natural progression of your story It’s easy to be extremely plot-focused when writing your novel. But your plot, characters, & setting all go hand-in-hand to craft a compelling, naturally-flowing story So, this is your reminder — yes, plan your story, brainstorm, and have structure. But don’t be afraid to carve your own path.
