この曲、実はカバーだったって知っていましたか？
今流れているのは、YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA、
通称"YMO"が、1978年に出したデビューアルバムに収録されている、「Firecracker」。
実は完全なオリジナルではなく、
アメリカの音楽家マーティン・デニーが1959年に発表した同名曲のカバーなんです。
YMOはそれをシンセサイザーと打ち込みで再構築し、
当時としては非常に先鋭的な電子音楽へと昇華させました。
海外のDJにも注目され、
YMOが世界に知られるきっかけとなった一曲です。
40年以上経った今聴いても、色褪せない存在感がありますよね。

Did you know this track is actually a cover?
What you’re hearing now is “Firecracker,”
a song by YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA, also known as YMO,
from their 1978 debut album.
It’s not a completely original piece—
it’s a cover of a song with the same title, originally released in 1959
by American musician Martin Denny.
YMO reworked it using
synthesizers and programmed rhythms,
transforming it into a remarkably forward-thinking electronic track for its time.
The song caught the attention of DJs overseas
and became one of the key tracks that introduced YMO to the world.
Even more than 40 years later,
it still feels powerful and timeless.

1992년 류이치 사카모토는 바르셀로나 올림픽 개회식의 사용할 테마곡을 작곡했으며, 올림픽 개막식을 위해 작곡한 ‘El Mar Mediterrani’를 직접 지휘했다.
처음 바르셀로나 올림픽 테마곡을 의뢰받았을 때 그는 ”내셔널리즘을 고양시키는 스포츠 이벤트는 싫다“며 한사코 거절하였다. 하지만, 제작진의 열성적인 제안에 최종적으로는 음악을 만들어주게 되었고 계약금은 1달러였다고 한다.
