I don’t share my yoga practice as much as I used to, but I’m still practicing two to three times a week. Arm balances aren’t as central as they once were. After I tore my rotator cuff, I had to shift things. I’m bringing them back, slowly and on my terms. They don’t feel like they did in my 50s. That’s just the truth. And doing them in cold Denver weather? My body notices. I’ve always moved better in warmth. In the cold I’m tighter, stiffer, and I need more time to warm up than I used to. At 62, my body feels different than it did at 58, even though I lift weights three times a week, walk every day, and practice yoga regularly. Staying consistent doesn’t mean everything feels easy. When you see an older woman doing something that looks “crazy,” don’t assume it’s effortless. Many of us are working around aches, old injuries, and the normal wear and tear of living in our bodies for decades. I also know that when I sit too long at my laptop or spend hours in a car or on a plane, I stiffen up fast. So I choose movement. Not because it’s comfortable, but because it keeps me capable. You don’t have to do arm balances at any age. But I do believe in moving your body regularly and challenging it in some way. That’s how we keep our mobility as the years add up. How do you stay agile? #thisis62 #armbalances #over60andfit

Ever since I did my first Pilates class (I did the Windsor Pilates classes DVD in high school… 2003ish haha woah)… I always made my own adjustments to suit my body. I’d push myself when I needed, but also understood early on what it meant to work with my own individual ability, my own limitations, I did what felt personally effective, I tuned in. Then later I went to classes, in studios… I’d push myself too much in certain areas. I stopped tuning in and focused too much on what it “should” look like. I did this with Yoga too. This method… of focusing too much on “getting it right” and not tuning in led me to injury. Only since I dove deep into self acceptance. First for what I looked like, then everything else, including my Pilates and Yoga practice, have I been able to get back to the tuning in. I don’t do roll-ups. Why, I don’t like them, they don’t feel great for me. They don’t feel effective. They kind of feel injurious at times. I used to feel shame about this as a Pilates teacher. Because obviously I also never felt “good at them”. Anyway, that’s another story! Now! I’ve been diving deep into skeletal variation and I’m officially 🤯 you gotta remember that just like we look different our skeletons are different! For example, the vertebrae in your spine might be spaced further apart or closer together than someone else’s… this can totally change how a backbend feels or how easily you roll up and down through your spine. Maybe your hip socket faces more forward, your femur is longer, or your spine has a natural curve that someone else doesn’t have. These little differences are not right or wrong they are just facts. No pose will ever look exactly the same on every body, and that’s not just okay… it’s how it should be. So the next time your roll-up feels sticky or your backbend looks different to the person next to you… remember, you’re not doing it wrong. You’re doing it right for you.

Āsana has gotten the most hype… but don’t underestimate what subtler practices (and studying Sanskrit) can add to your Yoga practice. 🙏 My Sanskrit is and will probably forever be a work in process and a labor of love. I started studying Sanskrit in 2007. On and off, until I got serious about two years ago. Maybe too serious… because now my teacher has asked me to recite Bhagavad Gītā 11.32–11.45 at a Sanskrit seminar at the University of Barcelona. 🫣😅 🌿 #yjrepost Thank you for sharing your journey with us @2yfunctionalyogaschool

🌟 Finding Balance on the Mat 🌟 Every day brings new challenges, both on and off the mat. Some days the poses flow effortlessly, while other days they feel out of reach. Remember, it’s not about perfection—it’s about connection. 🧘‍♀️✨ Every practice is a step toward healing our body, mind, and spirit. That’s why I return to the mat daily! Each session brings me peace and clarity. Why do you return to your yoga practice? Share your thoughts in the comments! 💬

Press handstands were such a huge part of my yoga practice after I started this account in 2012. Among the OG IG yogis… it was a race to see who could do them first. Always loved a good challenge… probably why I love CrossFit so much now. 🤣 12 years later… this is all muscle memory. I probably press handstand a handful times a week and my practice is shorter and way more chill. Priorities change. People change. Practices change. It’s all good. How different is your practice from when you started??? 🤔 Wearing @aloyoga’s all new WILD PINK ROSE color. 🩷 #alopartner #yoga #yogapractice #yogajourney #fitness #fitnessjourney #handstand #presshandstand

Save & share if this resonates 🙏🏻 “yogas chitta vritti nirodha” A lot of the yoga poses & yoga-like movement shared on social media is often not truly ‘yoga’. As the intention behind it is to create a video. Which is fine, i’m doing it here! But when you’re truly practicing asana (which I for one can rarely film as knowing the phone is recording straight away distracts me) with the goal of stilling the mind, of taking the mind from scattered to centred, that’s when it becomes yoga practice. Using the body as a tool to recognise the inherent stillness that is synonymous with your natural being. “Yoga is the journey of the Self, through the Self, to the Self.” #yoga #yogaasana #yogaphilosophy #yogasutras #yogastudio
