Every wrong take cost me a little bit of my blood pressure 😂 This time I pushed myself out of my comfort zone, playing with bass harmonies and leaving the main bass line to the Novation Swifty Bass Station (APHX pack). 2 days composing, 3 hours rehearsing, 2 hours recording, 53 takes. GEAR • Swifty Bass Station @wearenovation • Launchkey Mini Mk4 (MIDI-mapped to Ableton Session View tracks) @wearenovation • Ableton Live 12 @ableton • Shure SM57 @shure • Fender PJ Mustang Bass @fender • Empty pickle jar • Bamboo drumstick • Clothespin • Scrub brush on the sink • Washing machine — Washing Up Beat — loop autoral que fiz na minha lavanderia, num calor bem brasileiro de 35°. I’ve been doing music for 15 years now, so I thought it’d be fun to look back. If you’re an independent artist who wants to learn how to do music full time, check out my book The Independent Artist’s Playbook via the link in my bio! I started DJing in 2010 at age 18. I was walking through a shopping centre and bought a CD called Ministry of Sound: Clubbers Guide to 2009 just because the artwork looked cool. That CD completely changed the trajectory of my life. In 2011 I got into music production. I noticed all my favourite DJs were playing their own tracks, so I googled “how to make electronic music” and found Ableton Live. I downloaded it, messed around, and started coming up with some rough track ideas. Over the next 2 years, I put all my free time into producing, learning theory, and teaching myself piano using a grade school piano book, a theory guide, and YouTube tutorials. Eventually, I realised I needed to leave Perth and be somewhere with more of a music scene, so I picked London. I quit uni, saved up by working as a tennis coach and wedding DJ, and made the move. London was eye-opening - I met so many artists and industry people, and it started to feel like a real career path. In 2019, I moved to Berlin after my UK visa expired. I couldn’t coach tennis without speaking German, which pushed me to commit to music full time. Thankfully, I had some contacts in the sample pack world and began making packs, which brought in just enough to get by. By 2022, I was ready for more sunshine, so I moved to Portugal. Over the last 3 years, I’ve built up my artist project into a full-time living and finally feel like I’m living the dream. The path here wasn’t what I expected, but it never is.
