KYBe A Better Actor Series ♡ Starting From Scratch as an Actor in 2026. If you’re starting your acting career with zero credits, no representation, and limited resources, this is for you.
Your materials are everything. They are your marketing. They are what get you auditions, meetings with agents and managers, and real opportunities.
HEADSHOTS (Your #1 Marketing Tool)
Your headshot is the first thing casting directors see. It shows up as a tiny thumbnail on Actors Access while they scroll through hundreds of submissions.
If they don’t click:
• They don’t see your resume
• They don’t watch your clips
• You don’t get the audition
When you’re starting out, you do NOT need to spend thousands of dollars.
You need:
• 2–4 strong, specific headshots
• Different expressions (not the same face in different outfits)
• Clear casting types
• Emotional range
Each photo should communicate a different casting opportunity. Think characters, not aesthetics.
DEMO REELS & CLIPS (Your Secondary Marketing Tool) This is often the hardest part when you’re new and that’s normal.
If you don’t have professional footage yet:
• Use a strong self-tape that shows listening + reacting
• Avoid monologues
• Choose scenes that represent your type
• Keep clips short and intentional
If you have the means, investing in a high-quality self-tape studio session can help you create 2–3 polished scenes that showcase range. It’s not required and not encouraging you to spend a lot of $$$ but I’ve seen it help actors with limited footage.
You don’t need everything.
You need intentional materials that clearly communicate who you are.

ME"Being flexible" is a myth that's costing you auditions. Casting needs a clear entry point to know where you lie in the industry right now.
Consider these specific "brands":
"Strong single mom with fire"
"Buttoned-up exec hiding something"
"Warm authority with edge"
Specificity creates confidence, and confidence is what gets you callbacks. If you don't define your brand, Casting will define it for you.

TIShe almost didn't re-tape that night. 😳
She was exhausted. It was 11pm. And she couldn't believe that the adjustments I gave her would even matter so much.
They did.
Three bookings from one tape.
Will that always happen (3 bookings from one tape)? Probably not.
But will you always -- 100% of the time -- get a CD's attention when you know how to deliver exceptional auditions that exceed their expectations. Yup.
And that's 👆 what leads to being brought in by them again and again, callbacks and bookings (and more bookings).
And that starts with being able to make those kind of audition adjustments (without needing a Casting Director to give them to you).
