Most people use acetone wrong. Not because they are careless, but because no one ever explains what it is actually good for.
Acetone is not a magic stripper. It's not a sanding replacement. And it is definitely not a “wipe it on and walk away” product. But when you use it correctly, it can save you hours on a furniture flip!
Here’s what I see go wrong over and over again:
• People let it sit too long, then wonder why everything dries out or goes gummy and makes a mess
• They barely use any, so nothing actually happens when they apply it
• They assume it replaces sanding, then get mad when their new finish fails later
• Or they try to use it where a real stripper is needed and think it "never works"
Truth bomb: acetone is a reactive solvent cleaner, not a patience test. This is one of those tools that looks scary until you understand it. After that, it becomes a secret weapon.
It works best when you:
• Pour it generously (I mean slosh it on, not dab)
• Wipe immediately while the finish being removed is soft
• Use it on raw or stained wood, not fully painted surfaces
• Treat it as a cleanup and prep step, not the whole entire process
How I use acetone in my shop:
• Neutralize and remove stripper residue
• Lift old stain or gummy topcoat
• Clean overspray and sticky drawer gunk
• Degrease before sanding or priming
• Test whether I can skip stripper altogether on a piece (rare, but it happens!)
• Scrub embedded paint out of wood grain after stripping

VEIs acetone damaging to the natural nail plate and skin? What does it actually do and why does it leave white marks?
My advice is that if you need to take off 100% of the product it is safer to soak off the base coat, than to file it off. This is for soak off systems. If you use hard products, you will have to file it off but carefully so you don't overfile the natural nail.

SEIt literally does NOT do the job 😭 so I saw pink acetone and I was like oh my gosh absolutely! Yeah… that turned into regret after I attempted to soak my clients nails and realized it’s just nail polish remover 💔. The regular acetone we know literally disintegrates the acrylic. Well, the other one just makes the TOP layer soft… it would take HOURS to soak with that. I WAS PISSED!! ☠️☠️😂

WEAcetone works because it breaks down the oxidized polymer layer on the surface of the shoe. Over time, UV light + oxygen cause rubber and plastic to degrade, creating a thin yellowed layer that makes white soles look old and dirty. When acetone is applied, it dissolves that damaged top layer, lifting the yellowing off instead of pushing it deeper.
The results look instant because acetone evaporates in seconds, leaving minimal residue behind. But it must be used carefully—too much exposure can damage glue, paint, and foam. When applied with control and short contact time, it can restore the original color without sanding or heat.
