1️⃣ 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭: Use the pH to figure out if it's 𝘼𝙘𝙞𝙙𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙨 (when pH is less than 7.35) or 𝘼𝙡𝙠𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙨 (when pH is more than 7.45)
2️⃣𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟮: Figure out if it's a 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 or 𝙈𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙘 cause. Use mnemonic 𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐄 (respiratory opposite | metabolic equal) to figure this out. Opposite or equal in relation to the pH and PaCO2 (if it's respiratory cause) and pH and HCO3 (metabolic cause). See step 4 for more details
3️⃣𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟯: Determine if it's compensated or not: (if it's Respiratory acidosis/alkalosis look if the HCO3 is changing or not and Vice versa if it's metabolic then look at PaCO2)
𝐔𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝: HCO3 or PaCO2 will stay in their normal range
𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝: HCO3 or PaCO2 will be out of range
𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝: pH will be normal
4️⃣𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟰: When 𝗽𝗛 ⬇️ & 𝗣𝗮𝗖𝗢𝟮⬆️ or 𝗽𝗛⬆️ 𝗣𝗮𝗖𝗢𝟮⬇️ --> it's Respiratory cause (Respiratory Opposite: so that's in relation to pH and PaCO2 changing in opposite directions)
Metabolic cause: 𝗽𝗛⬆️ 𝗣𝗮𝗖𝗢𝟮⬆️ OR 𝗽𝗛⬇️ 𝗣𝗮𝗖𝗢𝟮⬇️ (metabolic equal: so that's in relation to pH and PaCO2 changing in the same direction)
