This version was premiered in 1938 by Toscanini ⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3️⃣ In 1967, Barber published a choral version of the Adagio, with added text from the ‘Agnus Dei’, of the Catholic Mass. Kilka dni później dostał ją z powrotem — bez słowa. Był wściekły. Myślał, że został odrzucony. Aż Toscanini przekazał wiadomość przez Menottiego, partnera Barbera: nie odesłał jej dlatego, że mu się nie spodobała. Odesłał ją, bo zdążył już zapamiętać każdą nutę. Na premierze, transmitowanej na żywo przez NBC dla milionów Amerykanów, powiedział o utworze tylko trzy słowa: „Prosty i piękny." • Sekret Adagia tkwi w tym, czego odmawia. Melodia wznosi się drobnymi krokami, nuta po nucie, a za każdym razem, gdy posuwa się naprzód, harmonia pod spodem stawia opór — tworzy napięcie, które nigdy się w pełni nie rozwiązuje. Ucho czeka na ulgę, która nie nadchodzi. To jak wstrzymywanie oddechu przez sześć minut. Kiedy wreszcie wszystkie smyczki zbiegają się w jednym akordzie fortissimo, to nie jest triumf — to wyczerpanie. Krzyk czegoś, co przez cały czas próbowało wznieść się w górę i się złamało. Potem cisza. I melodia zaczyna się od nowa, ciszej, jakby nic się nie wydarzyło. • To, co tu słyszycie, to nie orkiestra zawodowa. To Orkiestra Symfoniczna Szkoły Muzycznej im. Stanisława Moniuszki w Bielsku-Białej, na południu Polski. Uczniowie. Pod batutą Andrzeja Kucybały, który prowadzi ten zespół od 1982 roku — ponad 40 lat kształcąc muzyków, którzy trafiają potem do Royal Academy w Londynie i do konserwatoriów w Niemczech i Austrii. Może właśnie dlatego to tak działa: nie ma tu wypolerowanej doskonałości nagrania studyjnego.
