The day I accidentally stopped asking it, everything shifted. Instead of pushing and pulling to close, the prospect leaned in and asked to get started. Guide the conversation toward the outcome. When it comes to sales there are three very important rules and most sales people don’t understand them. You are not in the business of convincing people, you are in the business of trying to learn and understand their needs so you can help them. The only way to learn is to ask questions. The questions you ask will determine how the conversation goes and ultimately whether or not they choose to work with you. Biggest key. Stop talking as listen more. Bring items you can show them so you don’t have to tell them. Visuals stick with people. You have to let people come to their own conclusions and when they do, it’s a stronger connection. Ask, show, let them talk.

And the typical cute word play that the gurus and the headsets are peddling isn’t gonna work. And you know it. So it’s time to learn a little psychology. It’s time to think outside the box. At the same old stuff isn’t working, give this a try and speak with authority. Let me know how it went in the comments below. And for the rest of you– the people who will not actually use this, know that they’re not gonna say “SIA.” They know their name is not Steve. They know they can’t say it the same way on every call. It took me a long time to figure out what I was taught was wrong. Years of training and so-called education and pseudoscience shoved down my throat. Mirroring, gap selling, NLP, word tracks, rebuttals, scripts– all ingredients of a very unhealthy meal. We’ve all been eating at the wrong table for far too long. It’s time you allowed your brain to do what it’s supposed to do – think and solve. Mirroring never felt natural. Right? It always felt awkward because it didn’t feel natural. It isn’t natural and although in sales, we must be uncomfortable to get the results we need. Uncomfortable does not mean something that goes against fundamental human behavior. Uncomfortable means being willing to go somewhere somebody else isn’t. So you uncover the true motivations. That can be uncomfortable. But once you get there, you relieve the buyer of their burden. Once you relieve the “buyers burden.“ They become putty in your hands, and if you’ve done it well you will see them begin to mirror… You. Not the other way around. It’s time to follow somebody who actually teaches you how to sell. Not somebody who says all the things they think they’re supposed to say in order to be deemed a sales trainer.
