What if art could travel a continent? 🌍 The African Film and Media Arts Collective (AFMAC) began as an idea sparked by artist Julie Mehretu’s vision for her BMW Art Car #20, a project that redefined what art in motion can mean. Julie imagined the car not as an object to be displayed, but as a mobile site of creation, a moving workshop journeying the Pan-African highway from Cairo to Cape Town. Through this idea, AFMAC was born: an artist-led collective imagining new conditions of creation to create sustainable infrastructures and strengthen the artist community in Africa. #afmac #jointhejourney

Last Saturday, the week-long African Film and Media Arts Collective (AFMAC) creative workshop, in collaboration with Angels and Muse, came to a close, marking the end of a week filled with learning, community and life-long experiences. Over the course of the workshop, renowned artist and writer Coco Fusco, who facilitated the workshop, shared insights gleaned from her long career, provided valuable critiques, and fostered an environment of collaboration, constructive group critique, and knowledge exchange. We express our heartfelt gratitude to Julie Mehretu and the entire AFMAC team, Coco Fusco, and our amazing participants for making this workshop a memorable one! The first workshop of the African Film and Media Arts Collective has concluded in Lagos, part of Julie Mehretu’s collaboration for BMW Art Car #20 🎞️ For the inaugural workshop, AFMAC and BMW partnered with the non-profit organization Angels and Muse, located in Lagos’ Ikoyi neighborhood. Founded by renowned artist, writer, and designer Victor Ehikhamenor nearly a decade ago, Angels and Muse is a bridge for African creatives to the world and an important space for artists from the diaspora to return to. For one week, workshop participants, artists in the Collective, and members of Lagos’ creative community gathered amidst the lush vegetation and beautiful infrastructure of Angels and Muse to discuss and experiment with cinema as a form of intellectual infrastructure.
