This is the grandfather of the modern kilt, ‘the Great Kilt’ Its name in Gaelic means “great wrap.” Another name for this garment is breacan-an-feileadh, which means “tartan wrap.” (It should be mentioned that at this early period, tartan did not mean “clan tartan.” There were no named tartan patterns and individual tartans bore no significance as far as clan, family or district.) In English this garment is typically referred to as a “great kilt” or “belted plaid.” These names all are descriptive of the garment. In its most basic form it is a length of cloth, usually (though not always) of tartan. This wrap, or blanket, is referred to as a plaid. It is wide enough to reach from the knees to above the head (usually 50” to 60”) and is usually about four to five yards in length (though some may have been as long as nine yards). This length is gathered into folds or pleats and belted at the waist — hence the name “belted plaid.” The bottom should fall to just above the knee, and the upper portion can be brought up over the head or shoulder and fastened in number of ways. The earliest definitive record of this style of dress by the Scottish Gaels is an Irish account from 1594 entitled The Life of Red Hugh O’Donnell. The author is describing a group of Hebridean soldiers under the service of O’Donnell. He comments on how different their dress is from the native Irish. “These were recognized among the Irish by the difference of their arms and clothing… for their exterior dress was mottled cloaks to the calf of the leg with ties and fastenings. A group of young Polish highlanders from the orchestra Mała Armia Janosika went viral after performing Christmas carols during midnight Mass at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Rabka-Zdrój, southern Poland. Founded in 2015 by conductor Damian Pałasz, the orchestra brings together around 300 children, aged 4 to teenagers, who play violins and sing in the traditional góralska (highlander) style 🌟🎄🇵🇱 The 2024 video, recorded after Mass, showed the group performing the carol “Jezusa Narodzonego wszyscy witajmy” in their regional dialect. Shared on social media by figures such as Mateusz Morawiecki and Ian Miles Cheong, it gathered millions of views worldwide. The orchestra, which has performed for Pope Francis and at the Ulma family beatification, continues to promote Polish folk music across Poland and abroad.
