This year, the red Rowan tree bore exceptionally early and abundantly, which heralds the slow arrival of Autumn. Their beautiful, fresh, red fruits are just begging to be picked while they’re still there. The Rowan berries can be used for many health and beauty purposes, but also for its magical properties✨ Slavs believed that the rowan tree was dedicated to the god of thunder, and a tree planted near the house supposedly deflected lightnings! Our Slavic ancestors also believed that Rowan is a magical tree - the tree of life. It was used especially for protection, as the Slavs believed that the red color was a color of protection. A necklace made of Rowan berries, wore around the neck protected the person who’s wearing it, a garland made of berries hung in a window or on a door - protected the house. In Polish homes, probably everyone had a tradition of making Rowan garlands out of the fresh gathered berries, as good way to spend time with the whole family. Rowan was also considered the seat of good spirits, thus brooms made of Rowan twigs were used to sweep away evil spirits from the house. And also one of the most powerful magic wands are made from rowan wood! ✨ In the past, such garnalds were hung in villages on images of the Virgin Mary, on altars or on figurines carried during religious processions. It was said that the good Lord God created mountain ash to decorate the world, to comfort hermits in the forests, so that they too would have something to smile at, or to feed wild birds in winter. Rowan beads, woven into a harvest wreath, were supposed to guarantee a healthy and abundant grain harvest the following year. Some people are still convinced today that an abundance of rowan berries heralds good grain harvests, while if the rowan tree bears fruit too early, it is probably a sign of a harsh winter. Everyone on TikTok and Instagram is calling every spiral a “portal” and meanwhile the ancestors are probably like… absolutely not 😂 So after watching Skinwalker Ranch while waiting for my flight and them looking Navajo petroglyphs, I decided to research different versions and interpretations of the well known spiral. Navajo, Hopi, and Ancestral Pueblo spirals are not the same thing at all. Some mark migration paths. Some mark solstice light. Some are literally tuning forks in the Earth. Only a few are even remotely close to a “between worlds” threshold. Different land. Different language. Different cosmology.

Watching the sweet bunchberry watch the sunset When we recognize the whole world is a living, pulsing organism, then the plants, the stones, the clouds, the hummingbird become messengers through which to communicate with the wider experience of the living earth For me, this relationship of turning objects (non-living ITs) back into sentient subjects began with my relationship with plants I came from a very scientific background where it was dangerous to anthropomorphize anything I would have most definitely questioned if someone said that plants had spirits. Or that plants were incredibly wise elders that could teach us about how to be in right relationship with ourselves and the world AND I would have felt a stirring deep inside myself. An awakening of something ancient and primal. A force within myself that knew they were right I didn’t go looking to find the world as alive. Have you ever tried to force something or someone against their will? You have your heart set on a certain job or house on the market…you really want your partner to see your POV on an issue…you want to make the team or have your kids get accepted to a particular school? So you pull out just the right candle, pick the perfect herbs, confirm the optimal offerings, time of day, moon phase, crystal, and perhaps even consult a specific spirit or deity. Yet despite your best efforts, the spell or ritual appears to fall short and you don’t hit your goal. Ugh! It’s happened to all of us, as magical as we are! I know when I was younger in my practice I would definitely have scraped everything and started over, the next time with even more vigor than the first. As I continue to grow I’m learning that sometimes what isn’t meant for you, could be for the best…there could be something better coming along or maybe not getting your desire is a tragedy averted?? (I think about how many times I was tempted to do a love binding following a broken heart 😬 😣). Being a practitioner of magick doesn’t mean that the Universe suddenly becomes a genie 🧞‍♂️ or cosmic short-order chef. Sometimes it’s about that little push 😉 but other times its about going with the flow, as nature does. What do you think?
