OP✨Avenue C Plaza✨ is the recipient of the Creativity and Care Award for the 2025 Public Space Awards 🏆.
At Avenue C Plaza, many cultures of the neighborhood share the space to celebrate Kensington’s diversity. Thanks to community-led efforts, the plaza has become a multilingual, multigenerational gathering place for cultural life. Through music performances, arts workshops, and holiday festivals, neighbors celebrate Kensington’s diversity. The stewardship model is grounded in grassroots networks including the Kensington Cultural Council (KCC) and its partners: The Singing Winds, BIPA, Casa Cultural, Arts & Democracy, NOCD-NY, ArtBuilt Mobile Studio and The Kensington Stewards. In addition to cultural programming, the plaza supports civic engagement, mutual aid, and food distribution. NOCD-NY, who facilitates the KCC, is DOT Plaza Partner. The Hort remains an integral part of plaza operations, planting and support of the plaza, and is proud to have been included in the early stages of its development. In all, Avenue C Plaza is an essential piece of a diverse Kensington that reflects the surrounding communities and provides rare space for them to share, learn, connect, and grow in their neighborhood.
Special thanks to Cynthia Fortozo and Annie Ferdous for sitting down with us and sharing their experiences, and how the plaza has shaped the present and future of Kensington.

IASubletting my studio in the Brooklyn Army Terminal. Part of ArtBuilt. The studio is approximately 800sq feet and shared with 2 other super great people! My workspace is about 9’ x 11 or so. Ceilings are 11’ high. Lots of wall space! DM me if you are interested.

CAEver wonder how wildly different collage papers, each made with a unique technique, can come together to form something that feels balanced and whole?
In this collage series, I’m working with five of the different handmade papers I’ve created. Some are bold and textured, while others are softer and more fluid. A few came from unexpected tools, while others were made through more controlled mark-making. At first glance, they might not seem like they “go” together, but that’s where the magic happens.
By following my intuition and responding to color, texture, and shape, I begin to layer these papers, letting contrast and harmony guide the way. The process feels like a conversation, each paper adding its own voice while still contributing to a larger, unified story. This approach allows for depth, emotion, and spontaneity, and in the end, each collage stands strong on its own but also belongs to a bigger, cohesive collection.
