SEIs there anything like the magic of Royal Ascot! And, in this weather, I’m honestly not sure there’s anywhere better to be on earth! There’s such a sense of excitement and anticipation in the air! This is racing at its most exquisite - five unforgettable days of world class sport, style and celebration.
It’s safe to say that Royal Ascot got underway in spectacular fashion yesterday with scintillating racing, divine fashion and incredible weather! But it all started back in 1711 when Queen Anne first saw the potential for a racecourse, declaring it “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”. In the early days, the journey was a serious undertaking for racegoers - the rich travelled by carriage but at great risk from highway robbers, while the poorer classes walked. And typically people stayed for all four days of the festival at an enormous encampment near the course. In 1856 the railway arrived - never has there been such fashionably filled trains! And in 1912 the first motorcar was sighted at Royal Ascot.
Today all kinds of people rub shoulders at Ascot - aristocracy, royalty and ordinary men and women from diverse backgrounds but in the past this was unthinkable - in 1859 women were barred from entering the Iron Stand and divorced men could enter but were barred from the Royal Enclosure! Only in 1955 were the rules relaxed and divorcees were able to enter the Royal Enclosure - extraordinary!
