When we recorded with Scepter Records in 1965, the song took off and we were put on the map as a Canadian band, rather than a group of mysterious musicians rumoured to be from the UK. I get asked often who my musical influences were as I was learning guitar. There are many. Merle Travis was a tremendous example to me as I listened to his records and tried to emulate “Travis style picking”. He wrote “16 Tons” and many other great songs. In the late 70’s, I was invited to do the “We Are Guitar” show on CBC Toronto with Merle, Ed Bickert, Mason Williams and Les Paul, who had vertigo and couldn’t make it. Merle’s wife came and was very sweet. I carried his guitars everywhere and he called me little buddy. After the show, we had dinner. Merle had been drinking and when we got back to the hotel, he knocked on my door and gave me one of his spare guitars. It was a 1949 black burst Gibson Super 400 with P-90’s on it and his name on the fretboard in pearl. I refused but he insisted. The next morning his wife sheepishly knocked on my door and asked if I had seen Merle’s guitar. She explained whenever he’d been drinking, he’d gift it to someone and she had to track it down. We had a good laugh and I gave it back. It was a very thick guitar. Only two like it existed. I was just grateful have played with these guys. Chet Atkins later patterned the Gibson Super 4000 after it but thinned them way down. They are now in the Country Music Hall of Fame. At my request, Gibson made me a blonde version.
