Al-Biruni, a prominent Tajik/Persian scholar of the Islamic Golden Age, visited around Nandana, Punjab, in present-day Pakistan around 1016 A.D. There, he used trigonometry and geometry to measure the Earth’s circumference by calculating the angle of the horizon from a hill. He measured the dip angle using an astrolabe and he applied to the law of sines formula. Biruni’s measurement was remarkably accurate for his time. He calculated it to be approximately 39,968.39 kilometers. The modern value for the Earth’s circumference is about 40,075 kilometers.
