Wrapped up another Wildland Firefighter First Aid course last week with CU. I feel incredibly honored to have the chance to improve the survibility of these folks with such an important and dangerous job. These brave people move mountains with spoons and genuinely our lives depend on their work which far too often goes unseen. No matter where you live or what you do, their work directly affects your life. It might be raining, but that didn't stop wildfire training today! Our recruits spent the day learning skills to protect the community when vegetation fires spark up around Tacoma. Today, we invited our friends from @gig_harbor_fire_medic_one to train with us. Training together helps us work together seamlessly during large incidents that require multiple agencies. Think Tacoma doesn't need to worry about wildfires? Think again. Every year, our crews respond to brush and vegetation fires along roadways, in greenbelts, and in our parks. Training like this helps make sure we’re ready.

Larkspur Firefighters conducted some short wildland fire training yesterday both in preparation for fire season and to be ready for a high fire danger day today. “We had a small brush fire Wednesday which, with a bit of wind behind it, could easily have been a large fire” said Fire Chief Tim McCawley. “And with strong winds and hot conditions predicted today, we need to be prepared.” For wildfires, fire crews don the distinctive mustard-yellow Nomex shirts (and green Nomex pants) which they sometimes refer to as “yellowing up.” Crews first created fire line for a simulated fire in Sandstone Open Space using hand tools to scrape away the vegetation and forest litter. They then followed up by extending hose and spraying water along the line. Later they practiced structure protection using a single wildland fire engine and stretching hose around both sides of the home. In a fast-moving wildfire firefighters will have a limited amount of time and water to protect structures as the fire approaches. The wildland-urban interface (WUI) is the zone where human development meets or intermingles with undeveloped wildland creating areas at increased risk of fire. This education included a PowerPoint presentation and practical hands-on training.
