Will an AAC device stop them from talking? This is one of the biggest myths in speech therapy — and it’s simply not true. 💬✨ Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) does NOT prevent verbal speech. Research consistently shows the opposite: AAC supports and often increases spoken language. Here’s why: When a child has a reliable way to express their wants and needs, their frustration decreases, their confidence increases, and their brain gets repeated models of meaningful language. AAC gives them access to vocabulary, sentence structure, and social connection — all of which build the foundation for verbal speech. Language is the goal. Speech is just one way to get there. When we give a child AAC, we are not “giving up” on speech. We are giving them a voice. People sometimes ask what makes my approach to AAC different. The CLEAR AAC framework allows me to follow the child’s lead, model language in a multi modal and meaningful way to THEM. And that’s where the magic lives. Maybe you are an SLP that does this already or you are a parent that works with an SLP that practices this way, but many speech therapists follow a more structured and clinician-led way of therapy and then struggle with progress or carryover. But these little steps can make a world of difference with making progress with communication and reducing AAC device abandonment. Want to know more about my framework? Her family stopped using her communication device because her previous speech therapist said “she only uses it to ask for popcorn“. The previous speech therapist then begin using PECS, which turned out to not be very effective, and her communication growth had stalled. This sweet girl and her family came into my life almost 2 years ago and I said “let’s give AAC another try”. I asked her Mom how she felt about popcorn and she said her daughter absolutely loved popcorn. We pulled out her old communication device and sure enough…This child remembered the motor plan to locate and request popcorn on her communication device even though she had not used it for several years. While progress is not super quick with this child, she is absolutely making progress. (And today she even used a two-Word phrase in order to get the snack that she really really wanted. This is what happens when you don’t give up, when you use Multimodal communication, When you coach families as well as other service providers. And when you absolutely believe that a child is being intentional with their communication. #aacforall #aac #multimodalcommunication #speechtherapy

Just a little peek at one of our speech sessions today 🗣️ In therapy, communication can look many different ways. Sometimes we’re practicing sounds and words. Other times we’re using AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) to help children express their wants, needs, and ideas. We played a lot. Said the same words over and over. Modeled language on the AAC device. Tried again when it didn’t come out right. Took breaks. Laughed. Then tried again. Some sounds are getting clearer. Some still need work. That’s pretty much how progress happens around here. We model language, but the ultimate goal is always to honor what our little people are saying. This doesn’t always fit into our agenda, but it isn’t about us, as the adults. 😅. “Model without expectation”. If you have or work with a child, what does that even mean??!? It means using language AAN AAC while communicating and not MAKING a child also use it. We can encourage, welcome, make it fun, and give expectant pauses. But if a child uses verbal speech, signs, gestures, or no speech, we should never make them use a device. Sometimes this sweet child embraces having support with a communication device. This session, she was much more verbal. And that was great! The device is just a tool. But the GOAL is communication. Save this for a day when you need a reminder to let your child lead while you enjoy modeling language in a meaningful way. #aac #autism #speechtherapy

We immerse children in spoken language before they can use it… AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) is just another language modality. If a child is struggling to communicate effectively, withholding AAC is withholding language exposure. When children cannot effectively communicate their frustration increases, behavior escalates, learned helplessness develops, dysregulation occurs, and adults start guessing needs. AAC reduces behavior by increasing autonomy. Don’t wait! Language development is strongest with early and consistent exposure. #aac #speechtherapy #autism #earlyintervention
