Here’s why the eye doctor wants you to look at the hot air balloon. 👁️👁️ The autorefractor, or autorefractometer, is a machine that estimates how much your vision needs to be corrected. This is not the air puff test. Instead, it uses beams of infrared light to determine the shape of your eyeballs, based on the angles of the light reflecting back from the retina. (Those of us who are nearsighted often have elongated eyeballs that cause the light to focus in the wrong spot in our eye.) Infrared is not visible to us so we don’t notice. We simply see the image going in and out of focus because a lens is moving inside the machine to take several readings. On the other side of the machine, the optometrist sees a large screen showing a live view of your eyeball and they receive a print-out of the results, which tells them where to start when refining your prescription. Many internet detectives have attempted to track down the original source of the farmhouse and hot air balloon images, but no solid information has yet been found.
