HO🐍 Most tropical snake bites happen at night, at ground level, to feet and ankles. The single most effective prevention is wearing closed shoes with socks after dark instead of flip flops. Backpackers who get bitten on evening walks to the guesthouse restaurant were wearing sandals. This is not a coincidence.
🌿 Snakes do not chase you. Every story about a snake chasing someone is either a king cobra during mating season or a person who panicked and ran in a circle. The correct response to a snake on the path is to stop moving, give it time to leave, and walk around it at a wide distance once it does. A stationary snake is almost never a threat. A cornered snake always is.
🏥 If bitten, the only treatment that matters is antivenom at a hospital and it needs to happen fast. The correct first aid is to immobilise the bitten limb below heart level, apply a firm bandage from the bite upward along the entire limb, and move to hospital immediately without running. Do not cut the wound, suck out venom, apply a tourniquet, or apply ice. These things kill people. Know the location of the nearest hospital with antivenom before you go hiking, not after.
📱 Photograph the snake from a safe distance if possible. Antivenom is species-specific in many countries and a photo helps doctors identify it quickly. Do not photograph it by getting closer. Do not pick it up to show people. One hospital in Thailand reports that a significant percentage of bite victims were bitten a second time while attempting to kill or handle the snake after the first bite.
🔦 Use a torch at night in rural areas, not your phone screen. Snakes warm themselves on paths, stones, and concrete after dark because these surfaces retain heat. Walking through unlit paths with a dim phone screen and flip flops is a reliable method for encountering one at close range.

WAI was so off when I calculated what a year of travel would cost us.
We saved $100K because in my head that felt responsible. We were leaving our jobs, traveling with 2 kids, and I had no interest in pretending we were backpackers living on $10 a day. But every time I looked online, it felt like there were only two versions of long-term travel.
Either solo travelers spending almost nothing.
Or families spending $10K a month.
So I thought… okay, I guess we should budget like we do at home and assume life will still life while we’re abroad.
But now here we are 19 months later and I’m like… wait, how did I think we needed $100K for one year?
In our first 12 months, we spent $37K total.
That’s for our family of 4.
Living mid-range.
Not luxury.
Not backpacking.
Not suffering.
Just living a normal, good life abroad.
And these days we average around $3K a month.
So yes, I definitely overestimated.
But honestly, I think a lot of families do because the internet makes it seem like your only choices are extreme budget travel or spending like crazy.
And neither one was true for us.
It turns out it is very possible to travel longer than you think when you slow down, choose the right places, and stop assuming life abroad has to cost what life in the U.S. does.
That’s been one of the biggest mindset shifts for me.
