🧠 In backstroke, the pull is the most important part of the stroke. ❓ But it doesn’t start underwater. It starts with how your arm enters. The main rule is simple. ✅ You have to enter with your pinky first. ❓ Why? Because in backstroke, there is no gliding. You enter and you go straight into the catch. What I see very often is that swimmers pull too deep. They drag water from the bottom. ❌ This does two bad things. 1️⃣ First, it puts your shoulder in danger. 2️⃣ Second, it doesn’t create much propulsion. Pulling deep feels strong, but it’s not effective. ✅ The solution is simple. When you enter with your pinky, you have to pull through the side. 🆓 Just like in freestyle, we still want a high elbow catch. You catch water first with your hand and forearm. Only later you use the whole arm. The arm moves through the side, not down. Your hand should never go very deep. At the end of the pull, your thumb should finish close to your thigh. ❗️ This is very important. If you push water somewhere else, you won’t move straight forward. Simple physics. You have to push water straight back to swim straight forward. Your kick should be like a flutter, with the top of your foot brushing the surface. Here are two drills to help you improve your backstroke pull power. 💡 Use fins during drills. ✅ 6-1-6: Kick for 6 seconds on your back/side with 1 arm extended. After 6 seconds swap the arms. - Focus point: Rotation and arm position. Practice the rotated position by submerging the top shoulder underwater. Practice arm position by closing the gap between your arm and your head. ✅Single Arm: Perform a full backstroke pull with one arm only. - Focus point: Water pressure. Really focus on what you feel on your palm. As you bend your elbow, your hand should face the back wall and you should feel pressure on your palm as you pull.

En este reel, te muestro en seco y bajo el agua cómo ejecutar este movimiento de manera eficiente para maximizar tu propulsión. 💪 Flexión del codo de 90 grados: Tras el agarre, notarás cómo la flexión del codo, aproximadamente entre 90 y 110 grados, permite aprovechar la fuerza de los músculos más grandes y potentes: el dorsal, el bíceps, el antebrazo, y hasta la muñeca y la mano. Este gesto ayuda a arrastrar la mayor cantidad de agua posible hacia atrás y optimiza cada brazada para avanzar con menos esfuerzo. 🌊 Profundidad óptima: Mantener esa flexión de codo a una profundidad de unos 15-20 cm bajo el agua es crucial para evitar pérdidas de energía y mantener una buena velocidad y control en el nado. Do you know the two key elements of a great backstroke start? It all begins with hip and head positioning. Some athletes prefer keeping the head closer to the block, while many today choose a slightly farther setup. Both can work — but the real secret is the hips: always high, lifted, and away from the wall. This reduces the risk of slipping off the wall, the biggest fear of every backstroker. After the launch, the head leads, followed by the arms and torso, aiming for a higher flight and then driving the body back with an explosion. The goal: throw the hips high, so the entire body enters the water through the same hole, clean and friction-free. Finish by kicking the feet upward for a perfect, streamlined entry. How much do you bend your elbows on the backstroke pull? This is an interesting topic because the rotation has so much to do with the pull. If you rotate enough, you can do whatever you want with your helps and keep your hands under the surface. If you rotate too little, you force yourself into doing a bit less elbow bend in order to prevent the hand from breaking the surface. Rotate just the right amount and focus on pressing water back early. This typically means around a 90° bend in the elbow at the strong part of the pull. There still a big mistake in the “just right” video - can you catch it?
