VITodo mundo conhece a “Great Highland Bagpipe” — aquela gaita-de-foles que se vê a cada esquina da Royal Mile em Edimburgo.
Mas a “Scottish Smallpipe” é igualmente tradicional.
Tem um som mais suave e apenas nove notas. Além do tamanho menor, a diferença é que ela não precisa ser soprada: o ar vem de uma segunda bolsa, inflada por um fole que o gaiteiro aciona com o braço. Era a gaita tocada dentro de casa, em encontros e celebrações menores.
Esse gaiteiro estava aproveitando a acústica do Great Hall do Craigmillar Castle pra praticar, e me autorizou a mostrar a gaita em ação. (Coloquei legendas da explicação dele em inglês mas vocês podem ativar a tradução para ler em português)
Curiosidade: as Smallpipes quase desapareceram no século XIX, quando a Highland bagpipe dominou as apresentações públicas. Elas só voltaram à cena nos anos 1970, graças a músicos interessados em recriar o som mais íntimo das antigas tradições rurais escocesas; e hoje vivem um renascimento entre tocadores de música tradicional.
