Ysaÿe’s "Ballade" Sonata wasn’t just designed for the stage: it was created to test the very limits of what a violinist can achieve alone. Composed in 1923, it demands that the performer simulate multiple voices simultaneously, maintaining arpeggios at extreme speeds, precise harmonics, and string crossings that seem to defy the instrument's physics. It is one of the most feared pieces in the repertoire for exactly this reason: there is no orchestra to share the weight, no piano to fill the silences. Just four strings and the skill of the one who masters them.

Ysaÿe was a virtuoso before he was a composer, and that reflects in every bar. He knew exactly where the instrument's technical limit lay and wrote passages that flirt with that abyss. The left hand must jump positions in fractions of a second, while the right hand alternates between short bow strokes, ricochet, and sustained legato. The result is a dense, almost orchestral texture that sounds as if there were more than one musician on stage.

Maxim Vengerov, considered one of the greatest violinists of our time, delivers a performance here that combines absolute dynamic control, clarity in rapid passages, and that emotional intensity that transforms technique into narrative.
