Cardio is great but that can’t be your only method of exercise if you want to maintain muscle mass and bone density as you age! (And we are losing it by the day after age 30 !) Low impact strength and resistance training is where it’s at…easy on the joints and builds muscle in a safe and gentle way. (Yes barre & pilates is considered strength training since we work the muscles to fatigue. Also your body is a weight, and gravity is a weight, we don’t have to have a bodybuilding image in mind here) And the truth is, strength training your muscles actually causes your body to slowly burn calories throughout the entire day ending up to be more effective than cardio for weight loss and builds a strong toned body. A good rule is to pick the heaviest weights that you can maintain proper form with during your workout. This depends on the type of workouts you are doing. Circuit/Reps style workouts usually 8-15 lbs for women depending on the exercise, and barre pilates usually 3-5 lbs due to the structure of these classes And NO: weights won’t make you bulky so don’t be scared to go for the heaviest that you can do My take...
