The Borough of Paramus has filed a lawsuit against the American Dream mall, claiming it violates Bergen County’s long-standing blue laws by keeping roughly 120 stores open on Sundays.
Mayor Christopher DiPiazza said the mall’s actions give it “an unfair advantage” over other retailers in the county who are legally required to stay closed. Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco echoed support for the restrictions, which date back to the 17th century.
Voters last upheld them more than 30 years ago, in a 1993 referendum.
American Dream argues it sits on state-owned land and is not bound by county rules, calling the lawsuit “a meritless political stunt.”
Residents remain split. Some say the laws protect workers’ right to a day of rest, while shoppers told CBS New York they appreciate having the extra day to shop. The legal challenge could determine whether the Meadowlands mall must comply with Bergen County’s blue laws
