SOTHE POWER OF MUSIC!!! 😭😭😭
I recorded myself listening to Kpop Demon Hunters hit song ‘GOLDEN’ for the first time to see how I’d react, if I’d like it, just whatever my real-time honest reaction was going to be I wanted to capture it on video because there’s been so much incredible buzz and lore surrounding this song and movie (which I haven’t even seen yet!!) and yes you are watching me actually moved to tears in real-time as my ears and heart are taking in the song.
When I first got started in the music industry 15 years ago, fresh out of college and truly living on my own in this country for the first time (I was raised and grew up mostly in South Korea), I wanted to be a pop songwriter/producer and A&R. So I waited tables to make money and hustle and eventually made it to an artist management/A&R/publishing company in New York City. I idolized songwriters like Ester Dean and producers like Stargate and Max Martin, and spent my free time making bedroom pop demos on GarageBand or moonlighting at recording studios in Hell’s Kitchen till 4, 5 in the morning watching Grammy-winning sound engineers mix 147 vocal comps of the same verse line for hours on end. It wasn’t enough though, as I wasn’t quite able to materialize those early dreams of becoming a songwriter/producer myself.
The world and music industry were both quite a bit of a different place back then, and it’s taken more than a decade since I got started in 2010 for enough right things to happen and enough things to change - but the success of ‘Golden’ tells me the time has come. And there is still so much further to go for all of us Asian American songwriters, artists, and musicians who have been fighting all this time for a legitimate seat at the table, but at least the door has been kicked wide open now.
