Loose upper back. No tension = no power. 3. Flaring elbows. That’s shoulder pain waiting to happen. 4. Wrong bar path. The bar should touch lower chest, not your throat. 5. No arch. Flat back = flat strength. 6. Weak triceps. Your lockout is trash. 7. Skipping accessories. No rear delts or lats = no stability. 8. Bad grip width. Too wide or too narrow kills leverage. 9. No setup routine. Every rep should start the same way. 10. Bouncing the bar. Control it, pause, then explode up. 11. Bad breathing. Big breath in, brace, then press. 12. Ego lifting. You’re chasing numbers, not progress. 13. Inconsistent training. You bench once a week and expect miracles. 14. Poor recovery. Weak sleep, weak lifts. 15. No patience. 8 Reasons Your Bench Press Sucks (and How to Fix It) 1️⃣ You’re not using leg drive Drive your feet into the floor like you’re pushing the ground away. Power starts from the bottom no leg drive = no force transfer. 2️⃣ Your upper back is weak Your press is only as strong as your base. Pin your shoulder blades down and back, keep your lats tight — that’s your platform. 3️⃣ You’re not squeezing your glutes If your glutes are relaxed, your whole setup leaks power. Stay tight and squeeze to keep your body stable. 4️⃣ You’re not keeping wrists stacked over elbows Broken wrist alignment leaks force and stresses joints unnecessarily. 5️⃣ You’re not locking in 3 points of contact Feet planted. Glutes tight. Upper back locked. If one is off, your whole lift becomes unstable. 6️⃣ You’re not creating torque If your elbows flare, your shoulders take over. Think about “bending the bar” to engage your lats and keep your chest doing the work. 7️⃣ Your bar path is off If the bar is going straight up and down, you’re losing strength. Lower it to your lower chest, then press slightly back toward your shoulders that’s your strongest path. 8️⃣ Your setup is inconsistent Different setup every set = inconsistent strength.
