Would definitely be a rude awakening if you fall out of bed at night. Some of us find it hard to sleep in a full harness and attachment sling (like me, I turn a lot and get wrapped up in the slings), so we wrap only a double length around our waist, another one to the anchor and call it good 😂. When you first arrive in Chamonix, it’s impossible to miss that perfect granite obelisk – the West Face of the Petit Dru. Nearly 1,000 meters of steep granite, beautiful but notoriously unstable, with frequent rockfall. Still, ever since I first saw it, I dreamed of climbing it. When a solid weather window opened early this season, we knew we had to give it a go. The approach was still pretty snowy and sketchy, so we decided to take the first Aiguille du Midi lift and fly to the base with our paragliders. From there, just a short 10-minute hike brought us to the start. The climbing was stunning but brutally hard with heavy packs. Still, we pushed through and made it to a beautiful bivy spot after pitch 14. After a cozy night out, we continued at 7 a.m. and topped out the American Direct. We decided not to continue via the north face and rappelled back down instead. Heavy packs back on, we fly out and made it just in time for the 2-for-1 pizza deal at Big Mountain Bar in Cham. What a combo. What a route. Huge thanks to @_duncanrau_ leading for most of the route, shoutout to @evrstbar for keeping us running (or climbing), and shoutout to @flugschulehochries for teaching me how to fly and supporting me on this journey. #petitdru #americandirect #chamonix #tradclimbing #bigwall #paraalpinism #flytoclimb #westface
