What’s a mixed flock and why are we so excited about it? In the cooler months, native birds like pōpokotea/whitehead, pīwakawaka/fantail, riroriro/grey warbler, and tīeke/saddleback often team up to forage together in a ‘mixed flock’. Why do they do this? It’s thought to improve foraging (e.g., species like pīwakawaka can take advantage of insects that are flushed by other birds) and reduce predation risk. Researchers have found that within the flocks, there tends to be a ‘leader’ bird species that determines where the group goes (e.g., pōpokotea lead others in places like Zealandia), plus one or more follower species. Interestingly, the leader species tends to have good communication and anti-predator alarm systems. So by tagging along with a leader species, follower birds like the pīwakawaka may be able to eavesdrop on the pōpokotea so they can be less vigilant and focus more on foraging! “I thought I’d kick off my week as the @nhm_wpy guest by sharing a video I took on the same evening as my Highly Commended image ‘The Bat Snatchers’. 🦇 Hopefully this video showcases just how swiftly the stream of bats passed the hornbills as they lie in ambush on their carefully chosen perch. It’s a true testament to the skill of these hornbills that they can wield their large beaks with such speed and precision. I can only imagine the countless hours of practice it must take to make it look so effortless. This behaviour is known only from the Gomantong Cave system in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. I arrived with my fingers crossed but with low expectations of capturing a successful hunt - after all, wildlife photography often requires either a great deal of luck or immense patience. You can imagine my disbelief when, shortly after reaching the cave entrance, this scene began to unfold before me.” - Mark Whiten (@mpwhiten) A big welcome to this week’s #WPY60 guest, Mark Whiten. 👏 From a young age, Mark has always been interested in photography. A significant portion of his childhood was spent in India and Thailand, during which he established a heartfelt tie to Asia. “Whether it’s a species perfectly adapted to a specialised ecological niche or a unique behaviour shaped by its environment, there’s never a shortage of interesting subjects to photograph.” Follow along this week as we share a variety of Mark’s fantastic wildlife images. 📷 #WPY #WildlifePhotographerOfTheYear #WildlifePhotography #NaturePhotography #NaturalHistoryMuseum #WildlifePhotographer #Bird #Birder #BirdPhotography #Bat #Hornbill #Asia #Malaysia

For the bird lover in your life. 🦜 The ‘Slater Field Guide to Australian Birds’ is one of the most trusted handbooks used by birders across the country ... especially during the #AussieBirdCount! First published in 1970 and still in print today, the guide is principally authored by Australian ornithologist, artist and photographer Peter Slater (1932-2020). The Library acquired Slater’s significant archive in 2020 which includes around 3,500 illustrations of Australian birds, many that were produced to illustrate his much-loved guide. We’ve digitised a large selection of illustrations so that you can enjoy them online via the link in our bio. Or if you’d like to view the collection in person, please contact Ask a Librarian to arrange access before you visit. #StateLibrary #StateLibraryNSW #Birder #Birdwatching #Ornithology @birdlifeoz
