MARecon Aquatic Competency Test (RACT)
Posted @withrepost • @recontrainingcompany The Recon Aquatic Competency Test (RACT) is an event that students in RTAP and BRC will train for extensively. It is tested out three times, in RTAP, 1st Phase, and 2nd Phase BRC. It is otherwise known as the SOCOM Dive Screener, or “drown proofing” as a slang term. Passing this event is a graduation requirement for the Basic Reconnaissance Course and it will be tested out again on training day 2 of Marine Combatant Dive School.
Contrary to the beliefs of most civilians, this is not an event that is unique to Navy SEALs BUDs, but rather a standard test performed by all branches of service upon entering their respective dive schools.
All events are conducted with feet bound and hands grasping a rope.
-5 Mins of “bobs” in 12 ft of water
-2 Min float
-200 meter swim (dolphin swim)
-5 bobs to conduct a front flip underwater
-5 bobs to conduct a backflip underwater
-5 bobs to grab your mask with your teeth
-5 bobs with the mask in your mouth
After the first 5 mins of “bobs” there is no time limit for the rest of the event.
To train for this, students at Recon Training Company utilize platforms at the required 12 ft depth, however if they miss the platform during one of their “bob”s they are going to feel the hurt going down to 16.5 feet.
This is not an event that a person can generally just power through. It requires practice and getting to know just how your body responds in the water column. Different techniques will work better for different types of people. Some are negatively buoyant and can easily maintain a full breath of air for Bobs, but will suffer greatly trying to stay afloat and conduct the travel. For positively buoyant people it is the opposite. The students must get used to being in a state of hypoxia. Get comfortable being uncomfortable as we all say.
