Rafflesia hasseltii: A plant seen more by tigers than people 🇮🇩 Yesterday, Dr Chris Thorogood (@illustratingbotanist) from @oxfordbga was part of a team – including Septian Andriki (@bujangpalala44), who’s also in the video – that trekked day and night through tiger-patrolled Sumatran rainforests (an island in Indonesia) to find Rafflesia hasseltii. Few people have ever seen this flower, and the team, incredibly, witnessed it open by night. #FlowersofInstagram #RareFlower #Sumatran #Botanists #BotanistsOfInstagram #Rainforest #RainforestsOfInstagram

🌿 “All botanists are legit crazy. It’s a mutation!”🌿 Meet Dr Jana, Keeper of Singapore’s botanical treasures at the Singapore Herbarium in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. With about 800,000 preserved plant specimens, including 10,000 rare type specimens, the Singapore Herbarium is a time capsule of botanical history. Exciting news! The Singapore Herbarium is getting ready for its largest-ever digitalisation project, aiming to digitalise around 800,000 specimens! Once completed, it will be the largest online database of specimens housed in Southeast Asia – opening doors for research, knowledge sharing and collaboration. ✨ More info about the digitalisation effort at https://go.gov.sg/digitalherbarium #NParks #NParksBuzz #CityinNatureSG #NParksPortraits #SingaporeHerbarium #SingaporeBotanicGardens #CelebratingSBG #PressedInPixels

Why did botanists insult this plant? For arrows, the stems were cut green, peeled, straightened, and let to dry. An infusion of the leaves of Baccharis salicifolia (mule-fat) was drunk by the Seri to lose weight, and for contraception and after-birth care. The leaves of Baccharis sarothroides (desert broom) were made into a tea by the Tohono O'odham. Note: the Indigenous peoples mentioned are still living cultures and when I use past tense it is to describe practices in a historical context. REFERENCES - Castetter, Edward F. and Ruth M. New Favorite Plant Unlocked - Garberia heterophylla, which is basically a shrubby Liatris (blazing star). I just finished a week of botanizing and filming the endangered and vanishing sand scrub communities of Central Florida, ALL of which are dependent on fire. The entire time I couldn't help but think of what a crime it is that so much of this habitat is so little-known. The logo on the license plate shouldn't be a stupid orange, but a scrub mint or a Long Leaf Pine. These plants communities are marked by nutrient-poor sand (that was once the beachfront), frequent fires occurring at intervals of 3-5 years, and spiriform (flagpole) habits, which are probably a result of both the heat and the nutrient for substrate as I have seen the same thing in South Africa and in Minas Gerais, Brazil. What an incredible and unique ecosystem, and how tragic that it is repeatedly endangered by greedy hungry developers with double-digit IQs and deranged values systems that worship only money. If you live here, I implore you to get to know these places, they are worth protecting with your lives ....

He proved that plants feel pain—but no one listened. Jagadish Chandra Bose didn’t wait for validation. In a time of colonial oppression, he quietly redefined the frontiers of physics and botany. And then… he gave it all away for free. 🎬 This is Chronicles of Spirit. Deciduous leaves are often large but not thick as they compete for light in spring and summer before being shed in autumn. This is very different to evergreen trees such as the often needle shaped leaves of many conifers or the big green lush rainforests leaves or the tough thick leaves of many Australia trees such as Eucalypts. #botany #nativeplants #autumn #deciduous #leafshapes #2702env #adaptation #japanesemaple #fallseason
