Today marks one year since I was suddenly paralysed. I was diagnosed with Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein Antibody Disease (MOGAD) and have had 3 relapses in the past 12 months so I thought today’s ’anniversary’ would be an apt day to post about it again. I want to raise awareness of MOGAD so please do spread the word just to make people aware of a rare disease like mine. This will probably be my last post about this as I want to concentrate on getting back to making jewellery and being creative. I made the first half of this video nearly a year ago, but I didn’t post it as I felt stupid! I thought I had heated my mould enough to avoid this happening but obviously hadn’t, and the silver popped as it hit the ingot mould and went flying (put the sound on to listen to the pop - it still sends shivers down my spine!) It left burns in my bench and on the floor but I was very lucky that none of it hit me. I also lost 5g of silver which I couldn’t find. The only place I can think it can have gone is up into the extractor. It put me off melting for a long time, but I knew I couldn’t put it off forever. So I bought a little air fryer so I could make sure the mould was properly heated throughout. And a full face protector - just in case. As you can see, this was a much safer pour and I’ll no longer be worried that it will happen again. Due to the soaring prices of gold and silver, a lot of jewellers are recycling their own metal, so please share this video so they understand and see the risks of hot metal hitting a cold mould. Don’t just heat the top of your mould but make sure it’s heated throughout. And that’s why I have an air fryer in my studio (I do have a separate one in my kitchen for food!) . . . #meltingmetal #dangersofjewellerymaking #safetywarning #bottlebee

All change at Bottlebee HQ. I finally bit the bullet and bought a Needle Flame by @elementsgb.co.uk at last weeks @jewelleryshowuk on the @hswalshltd stand. It arrived today and it’s all set up and ready to go 🙌🏼 This will enable me to melt higher quantities of silver and gold (and platinum) and pour the metal into ingot moulds, rather than relying on a charcoal block. There is now no need for oxygen and propane tanks to get the higher heat that I’d coveted. It will be a steep learning curve - I’ll have to learn how to solder with a smaller but hotter torch, and I’m sure I’ll unintentionally melt what I wasn’t meant to, but follow me to watch how I get on with it. Bye bye butane. You’ve been good to me, but you won’t be missed 🩷

Making jewellery involves toxic fumes and I needed something so I could work more safely. I tested the suction with my hand before I put it all together - it was powerful! It also gave me an opportunity to use these @maunindustries fine nose round pliers for the first time, which were ideal to curve the silver for a flush fit, First job in my new studio done!
