Let's know about the Cranial Nerves-Part II Here’s a quick, exam-focused walkthrough on Cranial nerves 3 and 4 which arise from the midbrain; 3 emerges from the front of the midbrain, while 4 is the thinnest nerve and exits dorsally. Cranial nerve 5, the thickest, emerges from the pons because it carries three major divisions with a high axon load. At the pontomedullary junction, 6 lies in the midline, 7 lies lateral to it, 8 lies more lateral and has two components (vestibular and cochlear). On the medulla, the pyramid is the anterior ridge and the olive is posterolateral. 12 emerges between the pyramid and olive, forming the characteristic “sandwich” position. 9, 10, and 11 emerge behind the olive. The spinal accessory nerve arises from C1–C5, ascends through the foramen magnum, and joins the cranial accessory part derived from the nucleus ambiguus, supplying muscles of the palate, pharynx, and larynx for speech and swallowing. Cranial nerve nuclei 3–12 lie in the brainstem: 3 at the superior colliculus level, 4 at the inferior colliculus. 5, 6, 7, 8 nuclei are mainly in the pons, with trigeminal nuclei spreading into the midbrain (mesencephalic) and spinal cord (spinal sensory). 9, 10, 11, 12 nuclei lie in the medulla, where nucleus ambiguus, solitary nucleus, and spinal trigeminal nucleus occupy the lateral medulla. Damage to the lateral medulla (Wallenberg syndrome) affects: Vestibular nucleus → vertigo Spinal trigeminal nucleus → ipsilateral facial pain & temperature loss Nucleus tractus solitarius → loss of taste Nucleus ambiguus → dysphagia & dysarthria Damage to the medial medulla affects the hypoglossal nucleus, causing tongue paralysis. . . . . . . . . . #medicaleducation #neuroanatomy #cranialnerves #brainstem #neetpgprep #inicetprep #mbbsnotes #medstudentlife #mbbsfirstyear #mbbssecondyear #usmleprep #clinicallyrelevant #anatomynotes #anatomylover #neurologyeducation #medschoollife #medlife

💫 that’s right! You can actually improve your vision!! . 🌀 I have had several clients improve vision, resulting in needing to change to less intense prescriptions, and the ability to drive at night again. . 👀 what’s most amazing to me, is that despite all we know about the eyes (and while I know a fair amount, I am NOT an expert in eyes!! I just work with them) even the most expert scientists don’t actually know how we see. . 👀 we know eyes take in light information, translate light into electrical signals that travel via the optic nerve into the back of the brain. From there, dozens of areas of the brain light up to process and determine what we are seeing. But we can only tell that eyes receive the information!! We still don’t know how we actually see 🤯🤯 . 🌀 and based largely on the research of Dr. Jeffery Goldberg at Stanford, (and more), eye exercises can actually improve your eyesight. (Thanks @missybunch15 for being the first one to teach me this!!) . 🌀 our visual system is more than just eyesight though. It’s how our eyes MOVE to collect that light information!! This is why eye exercise can be so so so important for your brain. . 💫 comment EYES and I’ll send you my free guide for eye exercises. . ❤️ improved vision is one benefit, but there are more, like chronic pain reduction and better mobility. . 👇🏻 thoughts? How your breathing impacts your heart rate: _ When you inhale, your diaphragm moves down. That creates additional space in your thoracic cavity. Your heart gets a little bit larger (technically the vena cava pressure shifts) in that larger space and thus blood flows more slowly through it. A neural signal is sent from your heart to the brain to say “blood flow is reduced” and your brain (subconsciously) sends a neural signal back to your heart to speed your heart rate up. _ The opposite happens when you exhale. Your diaphragm moves up, creating slightly less space for your heart in the thoracic cavity. The heart gets a smaller (again, technically, vena cava pressure shifts) in that slightly reduced space and blood flows more quickly through that slightly smaller volume. A neural signal is sent from your heart to your brain to convey “blood flow is faster” and your brain responds by sending a neural signal to slow your heart down. _____ 📝 courtesy of: @hubermanlab 🎥 courtesy of: J of Clinical Imaging (2020) . . . #neuroscience #science #ciencia #neuroplasticity #breathe #breath #lungs #heart #heartratevariability #brain #brainstem #exhale #inhale #calm #alert #autonomicnervoussystem #respiration #respiratorysinusarrhythmia

just sitting here waiting for the surgeons ever so patiently (learning patience even when it is most difficult ig, but like i rlly would like to keep my brain considering that is me, my mind is a “part” of me that losing would be losing myself in entirety) maybe its brain damage but maybe the app is glitching but if the audio seems mismatched to you, it does to me too lol #brainstem #brainstemcompression #brainsteminjury #braininjury #braininjurysurvivor #braininjuryawareness

DAY 18: HOW YOUR BREATHING IMPACTS YOUR HEART RATE• _ When you inhale, your diaphragm moves down. That creates additional space in your thoracic cavity. Your heart gets a little bit larger (technically the vena cava pressure shifts) in that larger space and thus blood flows more slowly through it. A neural signal is sent from your heart to the the brain to say “blood flow is reduced” and your brain (subconsciously) sends a neural signal back to your heart to speed your heart rate up. Summary: Inhales= increase your heart rate. Summary: exhales slow down your heart rate. _ If you hear of “heart rate variability” (HRV) (which is good for us), this is the basis of HRV. Note: now it should be clear why diaphragmatic breathing is good. _ If you’re curious to learn more about how the brain communicates with the organs of your body: Starting next month I will be covering that and many other neuroscience topics and tools in-depth on The Huberman Lab Podcast. Did you know your eyes and neck are connected?! If you’ve tried EVERYTHING to help relieve neck tension and pain... then you haven’t tried vision work. A few variations to try: 👉 Following your target to the bridge of your nose & out (pencil push up) 👉 Following your target in a circle (smooth pursuit) 👉 Switching eyes from R target to L target (saccades) Be sure to assess after each eye drill to see which one worked for you. Lemme know in the comments if you tried this!! What were the results! If you want to go further for your health this year, check out my Balance course to learn how to get better balance and get out of pain!
