No cuz why are there bamboo and palm trees along a creek trail in Northern California 😭😭😭 WHERE ARE THE NATIVE PLANTS? To an ecologist: this is alarming. You: should also be alarmed. Invasive plants are extremely flammable & are a wildfire hazard. What a dilemma because yes I still see their beauty as yellow and purple flowering shrubs, but once you learn more about why we need to restore native ecosystems and learn to recognize these parasitic species, going on a simple walk can become quite #disheartening. The deeper truth is always sad but must be revealed in order for Change to start happening. I first started learning how to identify trees and plants in these woods about 7 years ago, and I remember how exciting it was to start recognizing them wherever I went. I think tree and plant ID is an important skill that opens up many doors to appreciating the natural world. Whether you’re interested in foraging, studying galls or caterpillars, or exploring plant parasitic fungi, knowing how to identify plants is super important! I grew up in Eastern Massachusetts, and started planting trees on my family’s land in 2011. As if it were 1830, I moved west for the soil to plant more trees on farmland. If we could strategically move some of the forest from Massachusetts to other states, that would be ecologically and economically beneficial. Until then, let’s plant trees on farms. If you’d like to plant black locust (outside of MA) or other trees (in MA) on non-forested land that you own or manage, comment “Locust” and I’ll send you more information.

Black locust is native to the Allegheny plateau and surrounding bioregions. When managed, it’s a profitable tree for farmland in places where it rains and snows enough for deciduous forest to thrive. The wood it yields is rot resistant like teak or mahogany. The tree that’s 13 years old: I started it from seed in my college dorm room, and I’ve since high pruned it.
