Cable machines are one of the most versatile bits of kit in the gym. If you’ve ever walked in, seen one, and weren’t sure how to set it up, this is your cheat sheet. One machine. Simple adjustments. Loads of great exercises. How to set it up depending on the exercise • Cable lateral raise Set the pulley slightly below hip height • Pulldowns Single arm or standard Pulley set all the way to the top • Biceps curls Pulley at the bottom Face away from the machine • Face pulls Pulley around head height Half kneeling to remove swing Pull towards forehead with elbows high • Triceps pushdowns Pulley set at the top of the machine No need to overthink it. Set the height. Push close to failure. If you want more short, practical gym tutorials like this, follow along and you’ll be looked after.

Cable machines are a useful tool within bodybuilding. Their benefits include being useful for isolative movements, allowing a greater option of angles to perform exercises, providing constant tension throughout movements and it’s easy to alter the amount of the resistance they provide. For some dumbbell movements, the tension throughout the exercise can vary due to gravity. An example of this is gravity affecting the resistance curve of dumbbell flys, making the top the easiest part of the movement and the bottom the hardest. Where as performing cable flys allows constant tension throughout the movement. #training
