With the passing of Skyla in March 2021 and Kohana in September 2022, Morgan is confined in a minuscule space with male orcas Keto, Tekoa, and Adán. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t worry about an announcement from Loro Parque that she is pregnant again. If that happens, Morgan will for a second time be faced with the difficult task of raising a calf within the barren walls of a dreary and theatrical show stadium. These flocks first came to the ASLC as a part of a major project to help the recovery of eider species in Alaska. At the ASLC, our team helped develop captive breeding and rearing techniques for this project. We continue to collect data on these important species, and although they’re not as easily viewable by ASLC visitors, these birds still receive incredible care from our avian team.

In the wild, these birds would leave the nest immediately after hatching but would remain close to mom, following her as she snatches up insects and passes them to her chicks. While it takes only about a month for chicks to fledge, they stick by mom’s side for several months until they're ready to venture out on their own. International conservation efforts like captive breeding have been undertaken, alongside work by local governments, to bring this species—once hunted to near extinction—back from the brink. The Mekong giant catfish (Pangasianodon gigas) is one of the world's largest and most endangered freshwater fish, native exclusively to the Mekong River basin in Southeast Asia. This "gentle giant" can grow to astounding proportions, reaching lengths of up to 3 meters (nearly 10 feet) and weighing over 300 kilograms (660 pounds), making it a heavyweight champion of the river. Despite its intimidating size, the adult catfish is a toothless herbivore that feeds primarily on algae and detritus vacuumed from the riverbed. It is distinguished from other catfish by its silver-grey color, extremely low-set eyes, and the unique fact that it loses its characteristic "whiskers" or barbels as it matures into adulthood. Historically found throughout the Mekong's 4,800-kilometer stretch, the population has plummeted by over 80% since the 1990s due to overfishing, habitat fragmentation from dam construction, and pollution. Now listed as Critically Endangered, it has become a flagship species for conservation efforts in the region. These efforts include complex captive breeding programs in Thailand and "buy-and-release" schemes in Cambodia, where accidentally caught fish are purchased from fishermen and returned to the wild. Because the fish is highly migratory, traveling long distances to spawn in northern Thailand and Laos, its survival is deeply tied to the health and connectivity of the entire river system.
