The problem of God’s silence has haunted both literature & philosophy for centuries. Specifically in Western world, the fundamental debate between Christian Church & Philosophers started with human beings confronting a world that appears indifferent, chaotic, or hostile but God remaining indifferent or silent.
In essays such as Why I Am Not a Christian (1927), one of my favorite philosophers Bertrand Russell, reject the Christian framework of divine providence, salvation, & passive submission to God’s will. I find this very similar to how the metamorphosis of King Canute occurred in Vinland Saga.
Canute in S1, rejects the passivity of Christian faith and asserts human dominion as the path to paradise. After the death of his beloved father like Ragnar, Canute develops a more commanding & demanding personality.
He was consumed by the notion of faith since the childhood. His Christian worldview was one of submission: God rules the world, & human beings must endure suffering in the hope of eternal salvation.
Much like how basic Christian authority asks for. Unquestioned submission to Holy Father. This philosophy collapses with Ragnar’s death and the brutal realization that the world is chaotic, violent, & indifferent. Much similar to how Voltaire makes fun of Christian faith in "Candide".
Bertrand Russell intellectualized this. Although Russell never supported Monarchy or Authoritarianism like Canute, Russell's criticism emerged from the same feelings. Russell points out Christian faith hugely depends on the reward of Heaven Or Punishment of Hell system which thrives on fear & irresponsible moral urges of God.
So, God can never be the source of Morality according to him. Similarly, Canute is motivated by a quasi-religious desire to replace heaven with an earthly paradise. He also rejects the idea of Heaven & Hell & simply takes action to create his own heaven by might, by will of power.
